If I get a vote, I'd say future Japanese militarism is the least of our worries. Might not say that if I had just come out of a showing of THE GREAT RAID (a great movie) but what with N Korea firing off missles I think a strong pro-Western power (and that is what the Japanese are 60 plus years on) heavily armed is not such a rum notion.

What makes you think that today's Japanese- politicians and people - harbour anything like the ' world view' of their Imperial WWII predecessors?.. Japan is a fully democratic, integrated, capitalisitc nation bent on one thing.. carving a an economic stability in its region and getting its piece of the global economy to keep its millions of people, crammed on the islands, happy and prosperous.. They have no intention of building a massive military force [ which is what would be required ] to exert control/power over regional neighbours, especially the Chinese who outnumber them in every possible category..

the great Satan is China and what will become of it in the next few yearsw.. either it will become the global megamonster power elements of the west fear as its economy and need to feed its masses continues.. or, it will collapse from within as the former Soviet Union did when the reality of autocratic/restrictive rule fails under the demands of its newly liberated middle class capitalist cadre who have just been given a taste of how they , too, can achive peace and prosperity, a 52" TV and BMW in a single family dwelling...

Does anyone ' fear' the resurgence of a Fascist Dictatorship in Germany to the same extent as some of you have been quivering over Japan's ' militaristic ' possibilities?..
