The Europeans believe in a liberal social and political climate and have been practicing discrimination for more years than can be counted. They (as a society) do not believe in the death penalty but are more than willing to suppress their large Muslim population.

It is almost impossible to get many of the people in the Middle East to understand a free press and some of them think that the U.S was responsible for the whole thing.

A free press in essential to a free society and a responsible press is essential to political freedom. The whole affair is beyond belief and it is a good thing that the million or so Muslims who live in Europe are keeping cool heads with only a few going spastic. We can believe that many of the riots in the ME are somewhat government sponsored.

Harry a good post the most scarey part is the most of the faces you see in the forefront of most of these riots that you see all over Europe is 10, 12 & 14 year old children and the first thing that comes to your mind is another person with Hate for Westerns embeded in his soul.

Well, there are limitations to free press as it is not good to play with people's beliefs.I am a muslim, but I do not agree with riots.Firstly Islam is against violence.Secondly, violence is not the solution to problems.

So,there should be limits to free speech?
Who should make the limitations?Mullahs,police,politicians?

The only ban to free speech is that which is intended to physical harm as in yelling fire in a crowded movie theatre, or slander, which is actually very difficult to prove, and rightly so.

Not being good to play with people's beliefs sounds like a nod toward the cartoons. And that is exactly the kind of speech that is most protected; my ability to be critical of that with which I disagree. If it offends someone, oh well. But offending the pious is not really the problem. It is in offending the powerful i.e. mullahs and such, wherein they incite the riots and all of the violence that Muslims are supposedly against.

For such a peacful religion, there sure are a lot of people rioting, blowing up, and generally creating much violence.

Freedom of speech can be volatile. There is always the struggle between civilized discourse and lunatic ranting.
Our founding fathers were quite radical in espousing NEW IDEAS,and were quite rude to Kings and demagouges. The tradition continues...

Behlol: Is there no forgiveness (I ask this question because of your last comment and am just wondering)?

I am a strong believer in free speech, but stupid speech does get on my nerves. You should hear some of the things I hear when I go into the land of La La (Ann Arbor). I feel like such a conservative when I am there (Please stop the eye bulging now).

Freedom of speech is essential for democracy to strive. Considering that muslim radicals donot appreciate free speech, I fear it is inevitable that Muslims & Christians will unfortunately go to a bloody war. Sad to say the wide divergence of theses two cultures may result to the a very bloody crusade. Frowner
