Left over remenant of that nasty non-war over there. Just another reminder of what happens when the support of the people goes against the greater good. I place the blame for this directly on the shoulders of all those who protested the Vietnam war. Had the US military been allowed to do the job, none of this would be occurring thirty years after the fact.

Gunny, the politicians and the top military leadership were not without blame either. It is a much more complicated situation as you well known. The fact that the demonstrations in this country were anti-military as much as anti-war was a factor.

The nation did not demand better conduct of the war and it did not support the people who had to be there. It is amazing how many of the leaders of the demonstrations wanted to be politicians.

I don't lay too much blame for the conduct of the Vietnam war on the military leadership. Politicians, yes. Your point about those that protest leaders wanting to get into politics is certainly noted and worth mentioning. John Kerry stands front and center on that vein.

I probably place more blame on the top of the military leadership and very little on the middle of the pack. There were just too many generals who wanted to make a score instead of doing what needed to be done. There were many fine officers who served in Vietnam and many of them took their knowledge of leadership and applied to what is today’s military.

It might just be a matter of degree.

Hey, it's not exactly a raging debate fest in here at the moment. I'm making my small contribution...

It is a sad story repeated many times in many conflicts. I watched the Hmong documentary on The History channel and was the first time I had heard about them and their plight. I believe that both politicians and military leaders are directly responsible for the conditions that the Hmong's are in today. In my opinion these high ranking officials believed the Hmong were expendable and only were useful when convenient. Maybe somewhere along their trip to the top these politicians and military leaders forgot the creed of "No one left behind".
