Every Soldier and Marine there has the option to not follow orders that are questionable in nature, such as the one he provided as his justification for desertion. He should have done that instead of running away to Canada. They aren't there to shoot families, unless each family member has a weapon in hand. You don't shoot non-combatants or follow orders to do so. Capture and interogate yes, but the order to shoot them needed to be questioned and escalated.

I just love it when they use that defense. It is always a case of them not being trained or some such thing that is never true. I knew this stuff back in the late 60s and training is supposed to be better now. Maybe it is a case of some civilians wanting to believe that the military are a bunch of baby killers and this guy playing that card.

You have to play the cards that you have, how many times have you been delt a royal flush in poker? It probably had something to do with him not wanting to go to iraq for 3 years which is just as outragious as being ordered to shoot civilians.

I cant believe people are stupid enough to go to Canada and draw all kinds of attention to themselves by applying for refugee status or whatever, its almost like they want to get in the news, there are alot easier ways to get out of the military that dont carry the melodramatic aura of court martialed dishonorable discharged diserter (hey that was a reasonably nice flow of military buzz words they like to throw out there to make someone sound like a baby raper when all they did was quit there job)
