How to defeat IED's
What bothers me about all of this is we have the means to defeat IED's without resorting to special programs and placing so much extra armor on a humvee that it can hardly move. GET OFF THE FRIGGIN ROADS! What happened to lessons learned from past wars? Always take a different route. Never follow the same trail twice. House in the way? Go through it. “Carpet” SEMPER FI The Gunny PROUD TO BE AN INFIDEL Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don’t. “The Meek shall inherit the earth….after I’m through with it.” A pessimist's blood type is always b-negative |

nice rant, gunny..
and excellent postulation in theory.. but, you know as well as I that ploughing through some non-combattant's mud hut kind of diminishes the ' hearts and minds' thingy.. As , unfortunately, the Canadians have found out in Afhganistan, you can clear a section of road of IED's and after you've passed by and marked ' all clear' they sneak back and stick another one in place varying the route, I dunno whay they aren't doing that more, but, maybe its a timing thing, speed trumps other reasons. finally, I've seen on the discovery Channel big truck thingies that have chain whips and shovels on the front for mine clearing but, I guess, in built up areas and IED's placed in culverts/paved roads aren't susceptible to this same technique.. tough problem to manage...still, the media only reports the ones that go off not the many others they disarm or block.. There I was , at the head of the old 68th... |

Hmmm, point taken, reckon we could toss out a few bags of cement and a load of tin and plywood as we are passing through the living room an kitchen...

Actually, when I was in Iraq from 2002 to 2004 as a Scout Sniper with the Army, whenever me and my spotter went out at night to rendezvous with some patrols we would take a remote control car with a 100m range and let it act as a "point man". The frequency from the remote control was rigged by my spotter who was a electronic guru and it ran on all the known frequencies that (at that time) the remote controlled IED's ran off of.
We ended up setting off IED's left and right every time we went out without being in the blast radius. Unfortunately it also let everyone know we were in the area. It was one hell of a challenge to remain concealed without falling behind schedule. But it was fun in a twisted way. |
