DRAFT FMFM 1‑A Fourth Generation War
Excellent read, along with some of the very advice we have been getting from the Brits from day one. Take a little time and read this document. SEMPER FI The Gunny PROUD TO BE AN INFIDEL Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don’t. “The Meek shall inherit the earth….after I’m through with it.” A pessimist's blood type is always b-negative |

You oughta be a freekin Gunny-Gereral Gunny.
I've thought about some of these points for some time. This draft FMFM has some mighty insightful ideas. I'm reading the canons next. Love that historical context. I'm now realising that I've been preparing for the fourth/fifth generation warfare...where my continual rewatching of Jeremiah Johnson and Billy Jack is finally gonna pay off. Maybe we will all 'wise-up'. thanks gunny...YOU DA MAN! |

Just had time to skim through a bit but am looking forward to a good read this evening.
Better watch it Guns or you might get the reputation as an intellectual, thereby shattering the carefully crafted image of what a Gunny really is. |

Okay, my fault for taking the summer off, but this is the same stuff I was quoting ad nauseaum when I was arguing with Thud for so long on the draft.
Now everybody loves it. Oh well, it only matter that people get to the party, not when I suppose. There is a thread on maneuver warfare somewhere around here, and I would admonish everyone to read with a jaundiced eye. John Boyd was a tremendous figure; a statue of him stands in the Marine Corps museuem. Quite a feat for an Air Force colonel. But while he was trying to streamline the military for the purposes of maneuver warfare and troop welfare, politicians and those with an axe to grind were jumping on his band wagon simply to cut budgets, and turn his streamlining efforts into an anti-establishment, quasi-anti-military effort. Willian Lind is probably the best known of these axe grinders and sure enough, he never spent a day of his life in the military. But he was a career office jockey in D.C. working for such luminaries as democratic presidential hopeful Gary Hart. |

You'll have to excuse me, I get preachy on the maneuver warfare topic.
John Boyd's bio is excellent however. His personal life was a shambles but, when considering his overall impact on the U.S. military, and thus the world, it's incredible how many people he has strongly influenced but yet he is still so little known. Those who had contact with Boyd and were either encouraged in their maneuver warfare ways or were just out and out converted were Gen Al Gray, along with most of the current Marine officer corps, and as much as some of you guys hate these two, Cheney and Rumsfeld knew Boyd back in the 70s and his influence is obvious in their actions since they became a part of this administration. It wasn't a bureaucratic happenstance that the Marines were assigned such large roles in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Rumsfeld & Co. are religious in their belief of maneuver warfare and the Marine Corps' application of it, which is essentially expeditionary warfare focused on embracing chaos instead of futily trying to plan around it. |
