Hello, I have been thinking about joining the Special Forces but I dont understand alot about it. First, are the Ranger's considered U.S. Army SF, or is it completely different. Second, what should be the best subject to study in real hard for the qualifying scores on the ASVAB to get in SF. Third, would it be looked upon better for having 4 years of college opposed to no college? And fourth and final, how do the Army SF, Marine FR, and Navy Seals differ in training, operations, and chances on qualifying.

Thanks, Gerry

Gerry....first things first.
a) make an informed decision on branch of service
b) if you are leaning towards obtaining a 4 year degree, then by all means do so
c) enlist as enlisted or Officer based on above answers

Once all of the above is decided, then apply yourself towards the Special Forces, Force Recon, or Navy Seals. Each service has different levels of training and qualifiers.

Gerry-

Army Rangers are a specialized Infantry unit. They are smaller than a standard Airborne unit, and larger than the SF. They are considered a Special Operations Capable unit. Just like Marine Force Recon.

The US Army Special Forces Recruit contract is for MOS 18X. It is a highly competitive and tough job to get. First things first, ASVAB scores are a non-negotiable requirement. Your English and Math scores need to be high to qualify for the 110 GT score requirement. Additionally, you need to take the DLAB (Defense Language Aptitude Battery) and a Class IV "Airborne" Physical. Provided all other criteria are met, you can apply.

You will be required to attend Infantry OSUT for 13 weeks, Airborne School for 3 weeks, and attend Special Operations Prepatory Course for 2 weeks, before you can "try out" at Special Forces Assesment and Selection (SFAS) for 3 more weeks. Provided you complete all of that, you would then go on to the Qualification Course (Q-Course). Upon completion of Q-Course, you will be awarded the Green Beret.

Each SF-style unit in each branch serves its own purpose. Its a puzzle, and everyone does their part. There is no one is better than the other, because the difference in missions, its uncomparable.

Best of Luck! If you need more information about Army Green Berets, please contact your local Army Recruiter.
