my recruiter keeps telling me that i'll do great on basic... i really doubt it.
i'm 6'2" 185lbs and i can barely do 10 push-ups. i'm totally out of shape and he wants me to sign up as soon as possible. i dont want my basic to be the worst nightmare of my life any advices? |

Don't let the recruiter rush you man. This has been said before, but don't sign ANYTHING until you are ready. Work out on your own-it used to be the recruiters would work out with you to help you prepare. There are minimum standards you need to meet once you get to reception, and they're much easier than those you need to pass Basic. You'll need to be able to meet those standards to proceed, or you'll be stuck in reception for another cycle (probably another 10 days)-this in itself is discouraging enough to cause people to drop out. Work up gradually until you can comfortably meet those standards-the Drill Sergeants in Basic should help with the rest.

I would have to agree with that spckeith but I would tell you that if you really want to join the Army or any branch then you need to be prepaired to complete any task. So you need to work hard and don't sluff off.

Depends on which branch of service you are selecting. The only one that will really test you physically is Marine Boot Camp. All the others are comparable to the girl scouts Jamborie's!
max score in Marine PFT is 20 pullups (no time limit, but you gotta stay on the bar and your chin has to clear the top of the bar in order for it to count), 80 situps in 2 minutes, and a 3 mile run in 18 minutes or less. Do that and its worth 300 points. Do less and the points drop from there. The minimum is age based. I hate to get on a soapbox here. But I hate ALL recruiters. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM.
I don't know how many times they lied to me 'an my battle's faces, or just didnt know what they were talking about because their MOS was completely different. That being said, I was 5'4 and 126 lbs when I joined the Army. Now I'm still the same. They key is you have to put EVERYTHING into it, and then some. If you don't then you will be pushed back. Also you can change your job pretty easily if in the army, I have no clue about the marines. Give a man a gun he thinks he's Superman. Give him two and he thinks he's God. |
