Wow, you guys all have impresive service records. I can only hope I get in and like it enough to stay in for twenty. Although if I do go infantry I heard it is hard to switch MOS in active duty. I dont want to be in the infantry forever. I also recently was talking to someone in the Gaurd, they said they could hook me up. I actullay went to college with her. Her unit is deploying in two months to Iraq. I dont think I will do that to start with. I want active duty. Full timer.
Does seem that we have a lot of aviation mechs in this forum. Thats what I wanted to do but dang clearance, Got to get in work hard and prove my selfe. I will give it my all 24/7, thats all you can do right. |

Actually, going from reserve to active service or moving out of the infantry all "depends". The Army may be different, but timing and luck seem to play a part more than anything else in these areas. I went reserve to active with no problem (in the infantry). I got out of the infantry almost four years later (luck played a part as there was a major restructuring of the infantry battalions going on at the time, and leaving the infantry was an option they gave at the time). Right now the USMC infantry ranks are FULL, and potential recruits are put on a six month waiting list. However, senior enlisted ranks are short, so they can't leave...it all depends.

By the way Patoloco. I will never forget now either. About Beirut I mean. I was five. Dont really remember much from the time. But I am learning more and more about military history in my present years, and will continue to do so.

HA! Now I feel old! Not really. I teach at a joint intel school now. Last year I had a student the same age as my daughter. I've already had my "I feel old now" moment..... |

My grandmother lost her brother in the battle on Iwo Jima. In her words, God rest her soul, it is every man's duty to serve in the military. Many who I have had great respect for, family and otherwise, served well as examples of who and what I wanted to be, for myself, my family and community, and for my country. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for opportunists who take advantage of, yet would not consider donning the uniform in defense of, our country. Damn...my condolences, Gunny. MasterTanker, I was the guy on the M88 following the 17 tanks, 2 APCs, 3 2.5 ton trucks, one Gamma Goat and 3 M151 jeeps, and later, HMMV's; and later helped run many S & R and automotive shops. Not one regret, gained much respect throughout. Thank you all for your service. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- thinking of a jazzy sig-line |

Thank you all for posting. I was missen ya. Started school on monday, "understanding middle eastern religion", thought it might help.
Talked to the recruiter again monday, going to meps soon to take ASVAB. Then next trip up to Meps will be phisical for my waiver. Then one more time after waiver is approved to inlist. Looking forward to swearing in. Quadvet, I am assuming you are a qaudriplegic. I have experiance as a in home care giver with a qaud. He is actually at the hospital I work at right know being taken off a ventolator. He is doing well. I would have been working for him again, but the person they hierd most resently will not give up the only day I can work. So I might not get the chance again before I leave. If I have'nt already thanked everyone for your service to this great nation, and the honor for being able to ask questions and comunicate with such fine gentlemen, Thank You. Keep your post coming and thanks for all your support. Gota go make dinner |

Coachman
We had five of them in our motorpool and I enjoyed driving them! We disconnected the ass end of one of them and tooled around in it. Had to be carefull as without the ass end on it, it was capable of doing wheel stands for great distances! I once kept the front end up in the air for better than 500 feet, until I ran out of beach. In Camp Pendelton there's a lot of hills and mountains to climb and there weren't too many that we couldn't get to the top with one of these and the old duece and half's and 5 ton trucks. Biggest problem then was getting down without frying out the brakes. Try coming down the side of a mountain off road in a convoy of trucks when one of them burns up his brakes or makes the mistake of using the clutch pedal! I was the commands tactical vehicle driving instructor for the 11th Marines back then and I have never had a more enjoyable job in my entire career. Yes, Dbharr, I slipped and fell and landed on my durn fool head in a couple feet of water, drowned and the whole shebang. C5/6 quadriplegic. This happened down in Fort Stewart, Georgia, 1990. Came home and been living just up the road from you in The Gorge since. Yeah, decent caregivers are hard to come by. Glad I had the "Army plan". The VA can be a battle but it's better than most alternatives.
Best of luck on your ASVAB and waiver, what do you need a waiver for? Gunny and Coachman; I drove the hell out of our Gamma Goat . Amazing off-road capabilities, if you could keep it running. Surprised that little 3-cylinder two-stroke Jimmy diesel could lug all that weight around. Did some wheelie hopping also, Gunny. Fun rig. Used to see them for sale on the net, though the engine was going for more than the whole vehicle minus engine. Dreamed of putting a 350 Chevy engine in one, I do believe it would bolt right to the bell housing. But I also have a love affair with the M151A2 Jeep, so go figure. Gunny, I forget what that ADA track is? I really like your photobucket album, hope you don't mind I took a peek. Borrowed this picture of my most familiar piece, the M60A1 tank. Built like an old Chevy pickup. I could pull the powerpack in 45 minutes, by myself and a M88 operator. Of course my favorite is the M88. Here I is with a 60 pack on the hook, '79 or so: The M88 is still being used after nearly 50 years. It has a born on date same as me; 1959. The original engine was a 1790ci supercharged air-cooled V-12 that ran on Mogas. Sounded like a dragster and shot 4' flames out the dual exhaust pipes, pretty cool. They use a turbocharged diesel version of that engine now. Good torque, but not quite as impressive as the original setup. Fun memories...hah. For a chuckle, check out the You Tube video of a couple jokers squashing a car with one in Iraq. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- thinking of a jazzy sig-line |

Quadvet you look like some one I knew once along time ago. I served as a tank commander on the 60A1's at Fort knox and in the 4/73rd Armor at Bad Kissingen Germany that was in the late 70's and thru the mid 80's. Do I know you? email me if we know each other, grandpaw001@gmail.com, I used to play around with VTR while I was stuck in the 2/41st Arty. You take real good care of your self we can't afford to lose you.

Unfortunatly it dosn't pay as good as my job now,(stupid state) or I would quit and go back and do it. at least until I left for my future plans. Maybee, if you dont mind and we get some good weather I could stop by and say hi? I ride a 01 harley dyna lowrider and am always looking for an excuse to go for a ride.Any hoot thanks for the encouragment. |
