Count it the greatest sin to prefer life to honor, and for the sake of living to lose what makes it worth living.

Thade78, my colleagues above have given you a neat link to click on to give you all the info you need about eyesight in the military. But, let me explain something about the military why good eyesight and hearing (and other things) are important to them: In the military, even if you are not in combat, you are constantly confronted with things that you must hear or see. If you can't, things may become dangerous to you. It is expected of every member to hear instructions and fire a rifle and hit a target. If you need aids to do so, it is clear that you are a burden to your fellow soldiers/airmen/sailors/marines. Therefore, the military has established standards to fulfill that requirement. Let me give you an example: My son has developed (after 10 years of service as an officer) a cerato conus, that is, his eyes corneas are bulging out which can not be corrected by glasses. He can not wear a gas mask because his contact lenses interfere. Although he can shoot a rifle, his contact lenses require extra hygiene attention not possible in a field environment. Hence, he is unfit for duty in combat areas and has left the military after 14 years of service.
