I have noticed that the Army dress uniform with all of its devices has what looks like a regimental pin on the right side for people with combat experience but I cannot find this in any of the Army publications as an authorized device (not that I could have missed it).

It this the case? I know that my uniform looks almost plain compared to the average PFC before going overseas but most of that consists of ribbons awarded for having shined shoes and a good hair cut.

We wore the reg. crest on our shoulder tabs but there was one on each tab. The CIB/EIB is worn over the heart which is on the left side. Maybe he's talking about foreign jump wings or something.

It is on the right side over the unit citations. Maybe only general officers wear them, they are the ones we see the most in their dress uniforms.

I too wore my regimental crests on the shoulder.

I am not sure what it is but as you all know Generals wore what they wanted to anyway.

Yeah, you should have said it was a General. Patton designed his own uniforms. They wear whatever they want.

Then again, I've seen pictures of highly decorated Israeli Generals who wear hardly any chest salad at all.

I am attaching the only 2 badges I could find.

The problem with photos of generals is that they are always left breast forward which obscures the left side.

Today I saw two soldiers (enlisted) who were discussing the MOH award today and they also had a pin above their unit citations. It was a red shield with an H in the center and about the size of a regimental pin.

There is only one item worn over the top of a unit crest on the right side of the uniform and that is a foreign badge. The US Army has given soldiers that participate and are awarded an item from a foreign military unit to ware that item. Only one item is authorized for wear at one time.

Most items are foreign jump wings. I personally wear the German Schuetzenschnur which is the marksmanship badge.

Here is a picture of one, all though this is more of a cord then pin http://www.tcnj.edu/~armyrotc/cadre/alumno.jpg

Hope this helps

Yes, now we are at the real question. Is it her current or her combat unit crest?

Ok, I understand what you're asking. The regimential crest has to do with your job. This one is to the AG Corps which I used to belong to, I was Human Resources. When I go back in I will be in the Quartermaster Corps I will be a Mortuary Affairs Specialist.

Unit crests are worn on the tabs at the top of the shoulder and on the berret and only change when you change units.

The only thing that changes on the uniform when you go to combat (besides awards) is the unit patch is added to the other sleeve of the dress uniform. An dif you go to combat a second time (which today is consivable) you have a choice as to which one, but only one, you want to wear.

Hope this helps

Thanks, that is the only thing that has changed in the things you mentioned since I was in (which was a few years ago). The links did not work for me but I can search and find them.

How long ago were you in and what was your MOS?

Take it easy, Mike

hikingmike, I was in from Nov 1967 through Nov 1970 and belonged to the AGC (71H). I did spend about 6-months working the the motor pool.

The Army has changed quite a bit since then and not all of it good.

Harry, on your epilets and beret you wear the UNIT CREST. On the jacket, over the right pocket, are your unit citations. Above those you are authorized to wear the regimental crest. I'm an engineer and mine is red with a gold castle and a banner with "ESSAYONS" on it. It makes for a more balenced look to the uniform and cost about $11.00 . P.S. I'm from MI also

The Navy and Marines have combat action ribbons, but I don't think the Army has one. There are separate ribbons for individual campaigns.
