hi i was wondering if anyone could tell me my chances of being selected to be a warrant officer aviator. im a civilian but i know they take civilian applications. im currently a commerically rated helicopter pilot with an intsrument rating and im working on finishing my cfi. my asvab scores were above what is required. ive talked to recruiters but, and nothing against recruiters, they just tell ya what you wanna hear to get you to sign. any help would be greatly apprieciated.

You need to work with the recruiters. Let them know you are serious about joining up. Remember recruiters hear all kinds of stories about joining and intentions along with requests for information. I don't blame them for getting burned out and giving out the impression they are just going through the motions. Keep trying with them and in doing so you will get thier attention focused in the direction you need to make this happen.

Oh yeah, show proof of your civilian helicopter license, that should get thier attention long enough for them to start listening.

What you are wanting to do is very doable.

Don't worry about the boards at this point. Main thing is getting started down this path, with your contract setup to allow you to become a Army helo pilot whether commisioned as an Officer or Warrant Officer.

Generally Warrant Officer programs are to allow an avenue for select enlisted to have an opportunity to excel. Both Warrant Officer and Commisioned Officers can fly in the Army.

Work with the recruiters and keep them on track with your end goal of being a Army helo pilot. Let them figure out which way you need to go. If it sounds good to you then go for it.

Like I said, don't sweat the boards. You'll be engaged in multiple boards though out your career, either in front of them or being a board member yourself.

helopilot22, just as my colleagues above say, you must work through the recruiters, they should know all the ropes. If you get unsat. answers try another one to verify. As a WO applicant you go at first through the same process as if enlisting, no difference. Keep in mind that if you want to fly and use your flying background you must pass the US Army flight physical. So, before you get too involved make sure you can pass that. Also, you can only become a commissioned officer (appointed by Congress and therefore capable of Command positions, Platoon Leader on up) if you have a College Degree AND graduate from ROTC, WP or OCS. Yes, the boards are a hurdle. They usually consist of WO and higher ranking commissioned officers such as Majors and Colonels. They want to get an overall impression of your personality. It isn't too much use to train for them, except perhaps taking some classes on free speach and expression. If you have good communication skills and a broad general education and know how the world functions, you should have no problem. Try to appear self-confident but not arrogant. Also, work on your spelling and diction. It could be that the board asks you for a short hand written essay or biography. The Army dislikes officers and WOs who can't spell things.

Pilot, I took a 'class A flight' physical (as it was called then) many moons ago. This was in ROTC summer camp. I remember that the medics separated those of us that put in for it from the rest of the crowd and gave us special treatment like an ECG with suction cups on your legs, a tread mill, special eye, hearing & blood tests and some other stuff that I forgot in the meantime. But I believe there were also some questions from psychiatrists (or is it psychologists?) If you didn't pass the physical, flight was out, but one still passed the general physical for Army officer.
