Veterans Told: There Is No Gulf Syndrome

GULF WAR veterans suffering from illnesses since the 1991 conflict were told yesterday that, after 15 years' research, no single cause had been found for their health problems.

The final judgment on “Gulf War syndrome”, dismissing it as a recognisable disease, was delivered by scientists from the Royal Society, the leading science academy in Britain.

In a study of all the work carried out into the syndrome since the conflict, the Royal Society said that it was time to call a halt. “I believe there is little value in conducting further research into the causes,” Simon Wessely, the co-director of King's College Centre for Military Health Research, said.

Professor Wessely co-edited a special journal documenting the research findings that was published by the Royal Society yesterday.

The judgment is a final blow to the thousands of Gulf War veterans who believe that they have been suffering from similar illnesses directly related to the conflict. The veterans have cited a number of possible causes, including the cocktail of vaccines many received to counter chemical and biological warfare attacks, leaks of nerve agents from the US bombing of Iraqi chemical factories, the use of depleted uranium shells and the spraying of tents with organophosphate pesticides.

However, the Royal Society report, Reflections on Gulf War Illness - a collection of journal papers - said that there was no increase in mortality rates among veterans of the conflict, and no single cause had been found to connect the range of illnesses diagnosed, which include chronic fatigue, blood disorders, severe headaches, aching limbs and depression.

Professor Wessely said: “An enormous amount of money and effort have been expended on understanding Gulf War illnesses worldwide. These reviews make it clear that there is no single cause.” In their review Professor Wessely and Lawrence Freedman, Professor of War Studies at King's College London, said: “There is no doubt that most of the agents that have been listed as causes of Gulf War ill-health can be toxic or cause side-effects. They are all plausible culprits.”

However, they queried whether exposure happened in sufficient quantities and at sufficient dosage “to account for a substantial proportion of the changes documented”.

Goes to prove reporters can ignore facts and print what they wish. I have over 6,000 PGW veterans whom I have assisted. Many have undiagnosed illnesses today, that have destroyed their health. Some had undiagnosed illnesses that later were diagnosed, but the conditions existed unknown for years.

WASHINGTON - There is no such thing as Gulf War syndrome, even though U.S. and foreign veterans of the war report more symptoms of illness than do soldiers who didn‘t serve there, a federally funded study concludes.

Yet there is no one complex of symptoms to suggest those veterans — nearly 30 percent of all those who served — suffered or still suffer from a single identifiable syndrome.
