Hello. I have my DD214 for 4 years AD (1974-1978). With my reserve time, I have documentation (a letter from Dept of the Navy, Naval Reserve Personnel Center, New Orleans, LA) of a total of 20 qualifying years of service. I retired nearly 10 years ago and am just now applying for a retired military ID card. Am I missing any official documentation? The ID issuing Center is a long drive from my home and I do not want to arrive lacking needed documentation. Thanks for any help.

Are you enrolled in DEERS?

Here are a couple of links that should be able to get your questions answered so that you don't have a wasted drive.

Thank you for your response. I found what I needed.
Additional required documentation includes two photo ID's. (I will also bring a copy of my marriage license as I used my maiden name the entire 20 years service.) That should do it. Wish me luck.

Gunny and Coachman, thank you for the welcome. My interest in the military was suddenly renewed when my only child joined the Navy a year ago today. (He graduates Navy Nuclear Power School in August. I am a VPNM VeryProudNavyMom)....I never wanted/needed a retired military card until he said that I deserve one, as I put in all those years of service. I am eyeing rental of a beach front cabin in Hawaii, open only to active duty and retired....gotta have the card for that!

I do have one more question....Does my husband qualify for an ID card now or only when I turn 60?

Thanks again, Kathy,VPNM

Good question. I believe he already qualifies as a dependent. You need to ensure he is listed in DEERS.

I do believe the age restrictions on ID cards, pay, etc are only based on the age of the retired member. He should be able to get an ID card.

As retired military your husband qualifies for a military ID card, children und 21 or 23 attending school full time.

I am also retired military, retired from the reserves plus my active years is 24. At this moment my ID card states 'Retired Reserves" and is pink [ real men wear or carry pink ID cards} at 60 a new ID will be issued to me and my spouse.

Welcome aboard and best of luck

Just an FYI for anyone-- I had my 21 year old daughter extended to 23 even without student status...I did have her listed as a dependent on my taxes (because she was) and the military agreed to keep her in DEERS until she no longer depends on us.
