In 1944 (October 24th) the U.S.S. Tang (Submarine) was sunk by one of her own torpedos...after attacking and sinking
much tonnage. 31 ships in her five patrols, totaling 227,800 tons, and damaging two for 4,100 tons. This record is unexcelled among American submarines Her skipper Richard O'Kane is (the top submarine captain of World War II) a fine 'read': specs and her 'Final Mission'; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Tang_%28SS-306%29 This message has been edited.
