I'm pretty sure that you will have to go through boot camp because the AF BC in the shortest out of the other branches. now if you were in the Corp. then you would not have to complete BC in any other branch because of the length and toughness. but other than that I don't know much.
If you'd been where I'd been... if you'd seen the things I'd seen!...... you'd be me... Or someone following me around... |

Have you talked to the Navy yet about your intentions? They can tell you about the boot camp question. Wouldn't worry too much about Navy boot though.....it's about as hard as a walk to the refrigerator for a beer.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Gunny. I am getting crap on a military.com forum for asking the same question. This senior chief told me to get out the navy doesnt need an NCO that cant make it in another service.....i told him i look forward to working with someone of his caliber...... |

Pay him no mind. Do what works for you and your family.
Every branch of service has built in pricks an assholes. The Navy has the preponderence of them. Heck, even my sailor buddies in here can agree to that. I think they issue them a new asshole type attitude when they get thier chief's uniform. Thanks Gunny,
The reason i am still in is because Supervision like you. When i came in the Air Force in 1989 an old crusty Munitions Chief took me under his wing and taught me how to keep my head up no matter what. He also showed me to take crap from people in public and pay them back in private. lol.......Although the navy might not take me i know that i will excel in anything i set my mind to. |

ncasey.....most leaders in the service refrain from making blanket statements and grouping everyone together, but rather look at each individual situation seperately. Emphasis on 'most leaders'...
Them that don't, ain't leaders in my book. Here's a short story for you. I served twenty years in the Corps and now work for a major corporation that has a govt contract for the Navy and Marine Corps. I'm an Operations Manager down here at MCAS Yuma Arizona. I was stationed here for about 6 or 7 years during my 20. In order for us to fullfill our govt contract we have a Marine Officer assigned to us to act as single poc for the site. Yesterday while this Marine Captain was sitting in my office waiting for some of our technicians to solve a high priority issue for him (we did the work without any documentation and such, more along the lines as a personal favor to him) we were discussing Gulf War I. It turned out that we were both in the same location during the war, and that he was a Lance Corporal at the time and we had actually crossed paths during the time. I didn't remember him, but he distinctly remembered the Gunny that brought a fifth of whiskey to his hootch, shared a shot with them and left the bottle. This apparently impressed the heck out of him as he stated that none of his Gunny's even came close to doing anything that was so blatently outside of standing orders for the theater of operations. You know, no alcohol allowed in Saudi.... SEMPER FI The Gunny PROUD TO BE AN INFIDEL I prefer to think that the chip on my shoulder gives the monkey on my back something to play with. ncasey1-I have been out of the USN since 1973 but from what I hear their policys have not changed much when it comes to crossing over I guess it depends a lot on the type of schooling you have.As far as what thegunny said I doubt if there is any more assholes in the USN than any where else I met some pretty big ones in all branches of the services. Most E-7 E-8 & E-9 earned the right to be that way.But in the Navy most of our Hardasses came from Deck Divisions BMs &GMs.As far as Boot Camp the Navy's just like thegunny said don't mean crap but if and when you go onboard Ship it does happen a Saliors biggest fear is a fire or flooding on his ship all the combat training in the world don't compare to fire fighting and damage control on a Ship esp.in an Engineroom or up on a Flight Deck of a Carrier loaded with bombs.Like thegunny said do what is best for your family talk to a Navy Recruiter (esp) don't go to CPO Forum in Military.Com those jerks don't like anyone except CPOs but no different is USMC forum they don't like you there either.I been to both.

Sully...how's it going for you? Good advice to ncasey. I know what your talking about concerning shipboard an fire and damage control. I took the shipboard firefighting course. Burned off alot of hair during that one.....

Sully....doing just fine. My job here is as Ops Manager for the NMCI contract. (Navy Marine Corps Intranet) You've heard of it? We are connecting each and every Navy base and every Marine base up on a single network. Been doing this since 2001.
As for ncasey sliding over to the Navy, after 15 in the AF, is cuz he just wants to be stationed with his wife. She's a Sailor already. gunny sounds like it might be one heck of a job I have heard of it don't know much about it but I had the pleasure of changing over to Bar -Code in the company I retired from Neil AirCraft after 28 yrs I don't think I came out on the short end of the stick because the company makes me a pretty good living they had a great profit shareing program.I read the part about casey wanting to be with his Navy Wife so all I can do is wish him Good Luck as I said I had a chance to slide to USAF in the early 60s I could have easly went into Army Warrant Program when I was in Vietnam because of all the Army Gunboats most people think Navy had control of all of the Gunboats not true the US Army had control of a lot of them and they needed supervisors for maintance because Motor Pool and Boat maintance are diffrent ball games.

Ah-ha! It's your fault! Hope this NMCI thing improves...lotta red tape getting anything done before I retired a few months ago. I had to call a 1-800 in God knows where to get the gal down the hall to come look at my computer. Might take a week before she could walk the 100ft or so. She had to wait for the home office to tell her there was a problem. Course, there were always ways around that. My wife became suspiscious of that "computer girl" I was always taking to lunch after a while. |

patoloco....yeah its all our fault. Problem with NMCI, is our hands get tied behind our backs from day one, as the network was designed according to ALL of the existing DOD, DON, USMC regulations. This is what they wanted. Make it secure they said, build it to meet or exceed all these regulations that we have NEVER been able to enforce ourselves. So like any good contractor, we did. You only got a small taste of it before you retired. I live it.

Boot Camp isnt a big deal for me . I was in AF Spec ops for awhile pounding ground with my Army/USMC Cohorts. I was basically wondering if its even feasible for me to do this move. I guess i was hoping to find out a surefire way to make the move to the navy. if i lose stripes no big deal.... would like to finish my 20 if not more if i could but i will get out if i have to.

I know several guys (and recently reunited with a few) that made the jump from USMC to USA - while staying in the service. So, it is possible, just have to meet that person who knows the regs (one guy I knew even managed to do it while overseaeas). One buddy of mine went through the Army recruiter to make it happen.

I would make sure you get the co location in writing otherwise you would be better off staying in the guard and having her get out after her contract, that way you are not asking the military for permission to be married (ie live together etc) everything that a marriage entails.

Well all i have finally determined what i am doing with my career. I am leaving AD Air Force to finish my time in the Air Reserves. I can still get an active retirement doing tours... so with a little more that 3 yrs left i'll do that nad finish it up. I've been in too long and seen to many things happen to want to switch services this late in the game. Although i think i would have made a great Sailor i'll stick to the Air Force. Thanks to all who replied and tried helping. And especially thank to you Gunny .. your the best
