In the medical manual I have read this regarding ADD:
a. Attention Deficit Disorder. Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (314), or Perceptual/Learning Disorder(s) (315) is disqualifying, unless applicant can demonstrate passing academic performance and there has been no use of medication(s) in the previous 12 months. And this regarding OCD: k. Anxiety disorders. Current or history of anxiety disorders [anxiety (300.01), panic (300.2)] agoraphobia (300.21), social phobia (300.23), simple phobias (300.29), obsessive-compulsive (300.3), other acute reactions to stress (308), posttraumatic stress disorder (309.81) are disqualifying. I was taking ritalin probably from 6 to 14. When I was 11 I also had to start taking medication for OCD as well, that only lasted a couple of years though. On the summer before I went into high school I quit taking all medications. My dad told me the therapist had suggested that the medication did not benefit me and that I was overly medicated. So then I just went to the doctor who prescribed me the medication and told him I didn't want to take it anymore. This was right after I turned 14, I am now 21. I did well in high school without the ritalin and other medications, got A's and B's. In college I have a 4.0 GPA. Would this disqualify me from joining the Coast Guard? |

OCD huh? When young Marines graduate boot, they all have OCD displayed by saluting everything that moves.

It's probably not an issue at all (I say "probably" because dumber things have happened). But, it sounds like your case is the equivalent of "childhood asthma" (I say this because childhood asthma is a more frequent kind of thing recruiters run into). If there are no current issues and the last "episode" you had was at the age of 14, then there are no issues.
Oh, and Gunny, the Bolivian (Enlisted) Marines have a saying-- "If it moves, salute it. If it doesn't move, paint it." |
