Hi, i am really considering joining the marines when i get out of high school. I just have a few questions about it. I know that being a Marine pretty much means your going to be in combat depending on what you do. I don't really have a problem with this but i was just wondering what fields are more of a security force or like defensive or something, like the military police i think, then just like someone right on the main battlefield like a tank driver or something. I also was just wondering if my eyes will have a negative impact on what i can do, my eye sight it pretty bad, but its 100% correctable, i wear contacts or glasses and have 20/20. I was just wondering if that will be a problem.
Thanks for the help! |

Joining the Marines huh? Not a bad choice. I recommend you take the time and stop in and see the local Marine recruiter. Depending on your qualifications, education, test scores will the the deciding factor on the type of MOS you will be assigned after your boot camp training. It could be Infantry, Armor, Combat Support, Artillery, Logistics, Aviation to name a few. All Marines are given the essential combat training as each Marine is first and foremost a Marine Rifleman regardless of MOS. The vison thing, as long as its correctable you will be eligible for majority of these types of jobs. Exception is being a pilot. The Commandant has ordered that each and every active duty Marine will have combat tours. I served twenty years in the Corps and enjoyed most of it. Certainly don't regret taking that path in life. Based on your qualifications derived from your performance, ASVAB scores, they will generate a listing of all the available jobs you qualify for. You will select the top three that you feel you would like to do. When you sign your contract, you can enter one of those three in your contract and have a contracted position. The other things to consider are how long of a wait before your school starts. Some are every 4 weeks, some could be as long as 10 to 12 months depending on what type of training it is and seat availablility in that course. Or you could come in on open contract and the Corps will place you where they need you to be.
Ain't nothing wrong with mess crank or grunt. You could test out really good and get into aviation, armor, artillery, intell, comm, any number of really cool and interesting jobs. Go talk to the recruiter and get the real scoop. Have you mentioned any of this to your folks yet? If not, you better do that first and foremost. I only say that cuz Marine Corps boot camp can get real difficult without the moral support from family and friends. Not to mention finding out how they feel about their son becoming a MARINE. A lot of folks tend to believe its a great thing and all that, but just not for my kid. These are important factors you need to bring into your thought and decision making process on this subject. You could invite them to the board and introduce them. We'd be happy to share our thoughts and experiences with them if you think that would help? At least I would, don't want to commit the rest of the gang on something like that. SEMPER FI The Gunny PROUD TO BE AN INFIDEL America is not at war. The Marines are at war, America is at the mall. |
