Immigration bill offers a military path to US dream

WASHINGTON -- A little-noticed provision in the proposed immigration bill would grant instant legal status and ultimately full citizenship to illegal immigrants if they enlist in the US military, an idea the Pentagon and military analysts say would boost the Pentagon's flagging efforts to find and recruit qualified soldiers.

The REALLY great part about this is it applies to illegal aliens as well! (Can't find sarcasm smiley) will have to do.

They should give it to them upon an HONORABLE discharge.

I saw a picture the other day of about 100 or so taking the oath of citizenship, all in uniform.

If we are going to have a Foreign Legion then lets look at the Gurkas (sp) Napal troops that the Brits had.

I'm a newbie here and i've been seeking way for several years to join USMC or any other military arsenal of USA. Received help too from a former marine corp from Houston.

I think this will help those people whose not on the right track. Instead of hiding from somewhere else, USA government can use their hidden talents, whether its about engineering or other technical skills...but the thing is, they should make proper investigation to their backgrounds.

Well, not quite an American Foreign Legion. You can now join the US military without a Green Card / Resident Card. But the criteria is strict (medical professionals and language skills desired) and based on location (they don't really specify here...or I'm too retarded to understand this). And you do have to be in the U.S. LEGALLY.

Now, as the effort gets underway to enlist nearly 900 foreign-language specialists and medical professionals who hold visas to study or work in the United States, personnel officials have their answer: There are likely to be more volunteers than they can handle.

By the middle of February, the Pentagon's public communication line had received more than 300 inquiries - currently up to four a day, officials report - while recruiting stations around the country have been inundated with hundreds of additional calls and visits from young men and women from countries as diverse as Iraq, Lithuania, and India eager to earn their American citizenship through military service.

But many of them, like Linas Tumasonis, a 23-year-old student from Lithuania at the Georgia Institute of Technology, will likely be passed over because they either do not qualify or live too far away from the recruiting centers. "I was interested in applying on the basis of my foreign language skills," said Tumasonis, adding that earning a green card and ultimately citizenship was "a huge factor."

But since the language specialists are only being recruited in New York City, "I'm not going to pursue this opportunity," he said.
