OK, but when he applies at the Naval Academy and can't spell without the correct button on the computer, they show him the door. The idea is that as an officer one must be able to express himself/herself. If you can't spell, you can't express yourself and the sailors under you, who paid attention in school, will laugh about you. And that is bad.

Spelling's always been a big thing for me. I get mad at myself when I send typos over IM. But it certainly matters in the long run when you have to send and review messages to your CO or XO, or write these messages for them. You don't want them to catch it and make you look bad, or send off messages and make them look bad. Also, in the chain, you are the reviewer for your sailors' FITREPS. Having a narrative with jacked up spelling and grammar doesn't help them much. una per praesidium |
