Hello everyone
i am a third year premed student and am in average standing at my university. I have always been curious about many things which has led to a fork in the road in my life. on one hand i want to become a doctor because i want to be able to help (sounds Cliché, i know but there is more to it) and on the other hand i want to join the military because i believe that we can sit around in our little worlds and have our big jobs with big money but we wont ever see the real world, only the military can show me that Recently i saw an ad (navy ad with a medical USS floating, not sure what ship though) and it inspired me to converge my roads and go for both of my ambissions at the same time. i want to become an MD within the military but i want them to also train me. now for my question: Is there a program in any branch of the military that i could join so they would train me to become a medical professional and then aid people all over the world? thanks for reading ~ |

Of course there is. THe military has a great need for medical proffessionals. There is a flip side to receiving all that training though. Its a committment to service for a certain length of time. Please speak to a recruiter. THe Army Navy and Air Force all have doctors and medical staff. The Marines do not.

I now have another question:
what is the difference between joining the navy army or air force in the medical division? and also, if i do complete the number of years they want me to, will i still be allowed to practice outside the military? Also, is it a good idea to do this instead of going to med school? like will it take alot longer? (more than 6 years) thanks ~ This message has been edited. Last edited by: Esce, |

There's not a whole lot of difference between the three...Though the US Navy takes care of the Marines as well. US Navy (as you already noted) does duty aboard ships. The other services don't do that. And if you're assigned to the Marines, you go where they go. A medical degree is a medical degree. There are no shortcuts in the military-- you'll go to med school and receive that PhD. The only difference is, if you agree to serve, they pay for it. Here's a link that may help: http://www.rit.edu/~gtfsbi/Symp/hpsp.htm |

Hi Esce,
I'm currently a med student right now (leaving soon actually - I hate medicine), but a lot of my friends are doing HPSP and mil med after graduation. They recommended this forum: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=72. There are apparently a lot of practicing military docs on that site that can answer your questions. Hope it helps. |
