Hi All,
I am an Irish citizen, currently studying Computer Science with Spanish. I recently decided when I graduate, I would rather do something meaningful with my knowledge rather than making bankers or software companies richer, so I thought joining the military would be a good challenge, and it would mean that I would be doing something meaningful with my life and degree. Since Ireland is neutral, I'm wondering, is there anyway I could join the US military, if so are there technology jobs in demand etc? If anyone can help that would be good. Much Appreciated, Tim |

You might have an easier time joining the Irish military, but you would need to speak to a military recruiter. You have to have a completely clean record both criminally and mentally. You won't get a secret security clearance detail right away, however. Best thing to do is contact a recruiter. Do a bit of research into what you want to do, and choose a branch from there.

Thank you for the reply.
I have no criminal history, never been in trouble with the police or law at all. I have a relatively good education, for where I was brought up. About the Irish Armed Forces, they are extremely small in numbers, and only do peacekeeping missions etc, I feel that I would be more suited to a bigger military, also the Irish AF is hard to get into as they are so small in number, so getting a position of some sort of computer engineer would be highly competitive. I haven't given much thought to what exactly I want to do. But I guess I would like to do something that would but my computer science degree, I would mind being a private or whatever to start up and build my way up. I was thinking the marines or air force. |

Timie, right now it is indeed awfully difficult to join the US military as a foreigner. The US Mil. has lots of applicants due to the low economy. You actually have to find a sponsor, immigrate, pass the physical and mental stuff (if you fail you wasted your time and, effort & money)to see a recruiter over here. In addition, you can only go enlisted, no matter what education you had before. Your irish stuff doesn't count and you are not a US citizen. I know that the Irish do very well economically right now. So, I recommend to you to go the banker route. They are paid so well presently, that they ruin everyone else's health. You coudn't make all that money in the US military.
