I was recently diagnosed with adhd, but have never taken any medication for it. I was diagnosed with situational depression a while ago, more than a year. I was on medication for 6 weeks. I have been off medication for over a year and been fine. I have been perfectly normal since. I want to join the airforce. Should I mention the depression and or adhd? Will they disqualify me from serving?

You should disclose everything. What really matters is your current physical and mental condition.

Hi MilitaryRabbit.. i dont want to disagree with thegunny... but in my experiences when i joined and discussions i have had with recruiters in the past couple months... TELL them NOTHING.. make them find it.. if they find it and u didn't tell them just say u didn't think it was a big thing and see if it can be waivered.. because if u tell them up front it will still have to be waivered? and if it can potentially disqualify u why tell them and if they dont find it... GREAT for u.. !!! good luck

um. mindcrime..
I'm not sure how things work in the US but, failure to disclose a previous or on-going medical condition has all sorts of repercussions where I sit..making the military work to find out your situation is a big no-no as far as I'm concerned.. it speaks to a mindset and character issues that don't sit well with the shrinks and command personnel who , these days, take a pretty in-depth look at recruits coming in.. stuff that got ignored before is now scrutinized in detail, what with issues of terrorist sleepers, bigots and anti-minority issues and all sorts of stuff no one gave a sh!t about in years past. Seen the bad that your suggestion has had..always be up front and centre, if you've the skills, present well and have no current problems the medicos will clear you and the military will want you..they aren't about to turn down a quality recruit on a minor issue as mentioned above when they are waiving petty crimes and previous illegal drug use records... no sense in prejudicing your chances before hand..my opinion anyway... There I was , at the head of the old 68th... |

Disclose everything up front. Hiding things (as Rocketeer says) will automatically get you disqualified in most cases. You past medical history seems to be......well, history and should not be an issue.

I have decided to take the open and upfront approach. I have also decided to go in with letters from my health care providers verifying that this is history and I show no active signs of anything being wrong. THanks for all of your input.
