here is my situation... I was sworn into the Navy yesterday as a GSE... This is not what I wanted, I scored a 92 on my ASVAB and I wanted IT. They told me due to my criminal background I could not get into IT. What I disclosed to them is as follows: I had a possession of marijuana charge a year ago, I went to court and it was Dropped down to Disorderly Conduct. I admitted to smoking marijuana 3 times. I had an Open Container charge, I was driving someone elses car, they decided they wanted to have a beer while I was driving and we got pulled over, these charges were dropped and I recieved an ACD in court. The 3rd and final thing is I got a number of traffic violations, the worst one being Reckless Driving, these violations got dropped down to two traffic violations, 1110A Failure to obey traffic control device, and 1102 Failure to obey lawful order. I've looked into the IT field and it says you need a SECRET clearance. now, when I originally wanted to join the airforce that recruiter told me that my criminal stuff would only disqualify me for the TOP SECRET Clearance. SO... based on all that, do you think I can obtain a SECRET Clearance and is there anything I can do to get the IT job I wanted, I don't want to be a technician. And is there anyway to go to a different branch say.. the Airfoce like I originally wanted even though I've been sworn in at MEPS and signed my contract (BIG MISTAKE). What can I do to get the job I really want, I dont know if they even checked to see if I could get the required security clearance and I got overwhelmed and convinced into signing up for this job I never wanted.

NOTE: when they did police checks, only the traffic stuff showed up. So.. if I can go to another branch should I disclose the information regarding the other 2 charges that didn't even show up in the state checks.

First off, SECRET is the minimum clearance you can have for IT in the Navy. As an IT you can be placed into TSCOMM which requires a TOP SECRET clearance. If you can't get a TS clearance then you won't be an IT. The Navy details by the needs of the Navy. Also, disclose everything you've ever done, even stuff you got while a juvenile. When they do your background investigation for your security clearance, they will go all the way back to when you were being potty trained. They will findout everything, so disclose everything.
Getting a security clearance costs a lot of money. So they aren't going to waste money if they know that you won't even get it. Plus a TS takes like a year to get, no kidding. The Navy isn't bad, I loved my time in, and sometimes wish I could go back. |

When you get out of the military you might be able to use the GI bill to get into IT in the civilian world. In the mean time just make the best of your situation and keep negitive attention off of yourself.

alright, I understand it better now, the navy is what I wanted, and I will make the most of it. I am excited to start a new lifestyle and not have to flip burgers at wendy's so I'll stop worrying about not getting what I wanted and like you said use the GI bill to study IT stuff when I'm out. I suppose it wasn't a mistake, I just.. was very dissappointed when I found out I couldn't get into IT it would have been a beautiful thing for my resume.

Also, GSE isn't a bad job. There are high paying jobs in the civilian sector in this field. Get trained and get experience enigma, then when you get out, you can get a decent job. Enlistments aren't indefinite nor is re-enlistment mandatory as rppearso might make it sound. Have a good time and keep your nose clean, and you'll advance.
