So it's been about a year now that I've been thinking about joining the military, and after some research on the subject I've decided that I would want to join either the army or the navy. I have a few unresolved questions that are still holding me back on my final decision tho, and hopefully you can help me out with that.

First of all, is there any difference in the quality of the job training in either branch? Is either more thorough, and more readily designed to transfer to the civilian world?

Second, I've heard that if you enjoy travel, which is an obvious benefit for me, that the navy is more apt to send you around the world. This is something I've always looked forward to, but just wanted to know if I would be involved in much travel through the navy.

My last question is probably the biggest factor holding me back from the navy, although I am leaning in that direction currently. How many computer oriented jobs are there in the navy? I'm very interested in a computer oriented job, and if that's something I cannot have, or would be less apt to obtain in the navy it may possibly sway my decisions.

Thank you in advance for any support, or answers you can give me.

Both branches of service offer excellent training. You should be aware that the Navy has outsourced thier Information Technology requirements with a 9 billion dollar contract to a company called(EDS) Electronic Data Systems. It's called NMCI (Navy and Marine Corps Intranet) This is the worlds largest single Intranet in existence.

The one set of IT related fields they have not been able to outsource for obvious reasons are those on board the ships. Thats called IT-21. Sailors will always run those. So yes, the Navy can place you into computer fields which will translate into usable civilian jobs once you serve your time.

By the way, I work for EDS on the NMCI contract.

Why not split the difference and go amphibious with the USMC? Big Grin

Talk to a Navy recruiter, see what's out there. As Gunny said, there are some USN IT jobs out there.

I joined the army because I could not swim, ha ha. But I will say I did receive the best training for 11B there was, (not) Big Grin

yeah, but it'll be a friendly fight.
Friendly fight defined:
1) fists only
2) beer bottles are fer drinking
3) chairs are fer sittin
4) one on one only
5) beer bottles are fer drinkin
6) no weapons of any kind
7) no hittin below the belt (first one does then it turns into an unfriendly fight)
8) loser owes the winner a round of cheer
9) winner owes the loser a round of cheer (in that order)
10) helps whoever is on the floor get up and out the door when the police or MP's show up
