For the past few months, I've been in the process of enlisting in the Navy. A few weeks ago, I went down to MEPS, took the ASVAB and went through medical, but did not swear into the DEP as I hoped to come back at a later date, take the DLAB, and qualify as a linguist. Days later, I filled out a written statement indicating that I knowingly withheld some information from MEPS medical personnel regarding my medical history (childhood asthma) and brief drug experimentation. My recruiter has not taken this admission well as he had previously encouraged me not to mention this on preliminary medical and security information forms. After I completed my statement, the station's Recruiter In Charge told me that he'd fax the paper to whoever it was that is authorized to handle such issues and have my recruiter call me the following week to let me know what was going on. He did not seem particularly upset about the situation and asked several times whether I was absolutely sure that I wanted the statement faxed. I called my recruiter a few days after he was supposed to contact me since I never heard from him and he told me that nothing had come back yet and promptly hung up.
My question is, am I bound to the Navy or does the fact that I've yet to swear into the DEP mean that I'm still able to consider other branches? I realize that the Navy has countless issues to address other than my own, but my recruiter's new found lack of interest in my situation leads me to believe that he could see me as more trouble than I'm worth. It's been two weeks since the statement was faxed, am I just being too impatient? While I've been waiting, I've gained some interest in maybe trying to enlist in the Air Force as an airborne linguist. Would my dishonesty with the Navy hurt my chances of being given the opportunity to join another branch? |

Congrats...you did the right thing by coming clean. No, you are not bound to the Navy. BoatsBM1 |
