I got a DUI about a year ago, and it will be expunged in about a year. Once it is expunged, my record will show no convictions. Will I be able to join once it is expunged(or even before it is expunged) by getting a waiver? And once it is expunged will I even need a waiver?

I REALLY want to join the Air Force, and this is very important to me. I know what I did was wrong and I really don't want to hear any trash talk about it. All I want to do is serve my country to the best of my ability and any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

You really should talk to the Air Force Recruiter concerning whether or not you can join the Air Force. We don't have many Air Force regulars in here that could address this with any degree of certainty. (key the lurkers and prove me wrong here)

One point I will point out. Most positions in the military require a security clearance. You will be asked to put in writting the answer to questions like have you ever been convicted of certain type offenses. You will need to answer that question honestly regardless of it being expunged or not. It happened. Honesty and integrity are what they are looking for. Leave it out and it shows up during public records searches and interviews and you'll be hung out to dry. You don't want that to happen.

Good luck and let us know what the recruiter does say when you ask them.

Just make sure you dont ship until the security clearance clears, you need to make sure you negotiate all that up front. Once you get to basic its scare tactic and fear monger vile. When you are in basic you can not get a straight answer out of anyone to save your life, the deception is unreal, you will meet some of the most dishonest dishonorable people you have ever encountered in your life in basic so you want to make sure your paper work is in order before you go. When I was in basic there were people that had "issues" with there clearnces and they were put in what you call "hold over platoons" which means you stay at basic until it is straigtened up over the duration of an undetermined amount of time and during this time they will try to scare tactic you into picking a different field and good luck getting legal representation from JAG, JAG is not on your side, they even had a JAG officer do a little dog and pony show while we were there and you have no one on your side as a trainee

Please don't pay attention to rppearso. He has practically zero military experience to speak from.

For instance-- Most recruits will not get their security clearance taken care of before they enter basic training. Depending on your background and the level of clearance you need, it could take up to a year for that to happen. In the meantime, you can be granted an interim security clearance to complete your training. Those can only be granted by the commanding officer, so until you have a commanding officer (usually at the training school), you can't be granted one.

And pretty much the rest of his advice...it's all crap.

Tracy I will have to agree with the Gunny's this IDIOT has no military experence at all OH wait he did cry his way out of the military due his ineptitude and just general whiner attitude and his desire to run home to momma and his baby bottle. Gunny is right it will take at least 6 to 12 months to get your security clearance I did not get my secret clearance till I was assigned to my first unit, but that was in 1969-1970 in Viet Nam. Hang in there you will be alright.

Thanks for all the words of wisdom. Smiler

Since posting the question, i've talked to an Army National Guard recruiter, and i still need to contact an Air National Guard recruiter before making a decision.
When i posted the question initially, i didn't know there was such a big difference between Active duty and Guard, and that's why i didn't specify. Appologies!
