I'm in fairly good physical shape, can do a ton of set-ups, and 5 days a week I start my mornings with 150 push-ups within 15 minutes of waking up. That's not my problem... The problem is that I'm trying to start running again, and I'm having some problems.

I started just jogging a mile at a time, and worked myself up to 2 miles at a time 3 times a week, but I noticed my knee's where getting pretty sore progressively after each run.

My biggest question is how much running or running requirements I can expect in basic training.

My second question is how long after I talk to a recruiter and pick a job that I can expect it to take to be sent off to training.

I'd like to talk to a recruiter early in the month, as I've heard that that is the best time to catch a job your interested in, but I also want to allow enough time between now and when I talk to him to make a little more progress with my sore knees.

Before you ask this is not a decision I've rushed into. I'm 22 years old so I've had some time to search and decide what I want to do with my life. I've spent the past year trying to get into some assemblence of physical shape, and researching the different branches of the military. I'm convinced this is what I want to do with my life.

Well, first off the Air Force is cutting back its personel, so it may be difficult to find the job you want.

Second, if you havent run in a long time or ever make sure to take it easy. Running puts a lot of stress on the ankles, knees, hips etc. Alternate between swimming, biking, and the thing that is a cross between a bike and a treadmill.

Also, if you work on your hip flexors, the muscle that runs from your knees to the sides of your hips, it will help your run. You can do this by doing a flutter kick, leg lifts, scissor kicks, and leg thrusts.

In BMT you will PT every morning and will be running every morning. Obviously the TI's are gonna yell at you but you are gonna be expected to give it your all. Also, dont worry about getting recycled, if you stress about it than you probably wont perform as well during the test.

Also, YOU decide when you are ready to go to basic training. There isnt a set schedule from the time you talk to a recruiter to the time you start BMT. If you get a good recruiter than he or she should be working with you to help you improve. If you dont get a good recruiter, than go to someone else. Trust me, you want someone who is going to be beneficial to you. My recruiter gave me a list of dates I could leave for BMT, i chose the one I wanted and if I wanted to wait than he was OK with that.

If you need any more help or advice post back here. This forum isnt the busiest but its one of the most helpful for joining the military

Good Luck

Ha! Us old farts like things to move along at a snails pace. We've already had enough of the fast lane of everyday living an posting. But Commie's right, this is the best place for this sort of thing.

Mind you, we have a resident troll or seagull that likes to prey on the unsuspecting young hopefulls trying to decide which way to go with the military way of life. He's easy to spot cuz he's the only one in here trying to tell you his poor life story and how easy it was to go awol.

Funny, I've only encountered one forum troll so far here... Guess who?
