Hey,

I am a prior-enlisted guy who is in the process of going to the dark side.

If anyone has any questions about the Academy or applying than direct them to me and I can do my best to help them out

Officers are all right as long as they know their place. Enjoy the academy!

I'm wanting to fly, and I talked to an airmen just yesterday while I was flying home from Virginia who said the Academy was the way to go for flight training. True/false?

I went into the gas station today and
asked for five dollars worth of gas....
The clerk farted and gave me a receipt.

There both good. It really depends on your interests. The Acadamy is awsome, and a very prestigous school. But i prefer AFROTC becasuse you get the campus setting of almost any school you want to go to.

So if I went with AFROTC, I should just look for a college that has a decent aviational sciences major to offer? I'm working on aviation mechanics next year at Tulsa Technology Center as a senior in high school so I can get free tuition from TTC once I graduate, and finish the course. But TTC doesn't offer AFROTC, so I'll need to find a school that does??? I'm such a Noob with this crap.

Looks like you already have a good plan in place in terms of working in aviation, so I'd recommend sticking with it. Get your degree before joining the military.

Ha, I've learned that already. My grandpa graduated from high school and joined straight up into the Navy. He ended up a petty officer rather than the rear admiral his dad became after taking his degree to Annapolis.

As far as USAFA goes, I think we get several hundred flying slots per year, which is a lot. There is usually a great chance of getting a pilots slot out of the Academy.

Since you already have a plan, I would just keep with it.

Good Luck!

something else you might want to check is if the university you want to attend has a cross-town agreement w/ a university with an AFROTC program. This type of arrangement is more common w/ junior colleges and major universities, but I think I've heard of this arrangement being made between two major universities in the same town.

Just a thought.

I'm not sure what I should do. I have a retired Lt. Col. from WWII who's willing to write two state congressmen to consider letters of recommendation for me for the Academy. But, at the same time, I have Oklahoma State University interested in me and they have one of the top civilian flight schools/AFROTC programs in the US. Plus, OSU is close to my hometown, so it's a shorter drive back.

Opinions are appreciated.

RaptorClaw,

Best recommendation I can make is to get a hold of someone at the ROTC unit at OSU, and find out how many cadets they're looking at commissioning each year, and how many of those get flight slots. Also ask them about your chances on getting a flight slot from the Academy. They may or may not get you all the info you need, but your best source of information will be people who are actively involved in training new LT's.

good luck.

Well I got a hold of him and he sounded very interested in me, but all he said was basically the only difference in the two is that in ROTC, 90% of your 4 years are spent as a college student rather than a cadet. In that case, the Academy sounds better.
