Hey,
I was wondering if there is a way to volunteer for korea before my DEROS. My assignment is currently Aviano Italy. I love the travel here, but i think it's just not for me. Too expensive is one reason. I really really enjoyed my time at Osan. I would love to get there before my DEROS because it is 2 years away. Is there any way possible?? Maybe volunteer for a special duty or can I just volunteer to get back early?? |

hmmm, let me get this correct, you are currently residing in Aviano Italy, and you would rather be in Korea?
OK, you are 35 minutes from skiing at Piancavallo and an hour from the beaches of the Adriatic. The closest large city is Pordenone, about 10 minutes away, and Venice is only an hour and a half away by auto or train. You want to trade all that for just 48 miles south of the Korean DMZ, the most forward deployed permanently-based wing in the Air Force. EGAD!!!!Osan AB has a mandatory curfew. Sunday through Thursday personnel and their dependants must be on base between midnight and 5 a.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, the curfew hours are 1-5 a.m. In keeping with this safety initiative, personnel who are reside off base are expected to be at home during those times at well. A frigging CURFEW? You sure you want to trade what you have for this? Well to be honest, the curfew didnt really bother me that much. It kept me out of trouble, and didnt mind continuing the party back at the dorms. Soju is cheap and so is beer. In Italy it's 4 euro for 1 Heineken. Thats ridiculous. One time I remember actually paying 6 euro for a random German beer. Besides the excercises, Korea is a great place I think.
The real main reason I want to get back so bad is my girl is there. We plan to get married in the near future sometime. (not a juicy haha) I would do pretty much anything to get back so i was just wondering if it was possible any way. |

hmmm, so the old saw of a girl in every port doesn't apply....oh crap thats for Sailors.
Know what you mean about the cost of brew, that certainly is a certified factor in making that type of decision....ranks right up there with something to poke on a regular basis. So my advice is to get in good with the guy that has some pull with handing out transfer orders. You can either take him out a few times an get him good an druck, or get him laid or both. I would request assignment at Yokota airbase. I was stationed at Camp Zama for a bit and I really enjoyed Japan. The women weren't that bad either. Just realize that you'll be one of the first to fight if shit hits the fan with North Korea.

I think that if you get in touch with your branch manager at DA, ask for a short assignment to Korea, it may work I did that but I was in the army, though I think every branch at DA has a career manager try that it might be your ticket to your honey.
