Well I've decided I want to join the Air Force and that I want to try and be a Security Officer. Does anyone know the likelihood of me getting the job(I know it's the job that has the largest amount needed) because I'm interested in it and also I'll be more likely to be stationed where I'd like(from what my recruiter told me). Also are there any special requirements for it?(certain ASVAB score or
previous experience) Thanks in advance for any help. |

Are you going in as an Officer or enlisted? I assume officer but want to make sure.
Being a cop isnt a particularly hard career to get into, I mean most people you fail their initial training are re-assigned to be a cop. Now, every base is going to need cops so you have unlimited possibilites for assignments. HOWEVER!, the Air Force needs come first always and you may not get the base you want. I know people who put their prefered base on their dream sheet (a list of bases you want to get assigned to and yes, they call it the dream sheet for a reason) and gotten their first shoice first time. I also know people who did not get a base even close to their list. I, for example, put bases in the west, north and east and even put Korea down but got stationed at Dyess AFB, TX. As for requirements, I dont know. I dont think it is anything specific to being a cop. You will need to be able to obtain at least a Secret clearance though. Also, I know of guys who shot expert on the M16 and got selected to go to army sniper school but I also know of aircrew who can outshoot cops. Good luck! |

I'm going in as enlisted. My recruiter made it sound like a lot of trouble to go in as an officer and also, I'm just ready to join. I'm starting to think against it though after reading about more and more Airforce Security officers getting deployed overseas during war.

Yes, as a cop you will deploy a lot and provide security for the base and for convoys as well as conduct security operations outside 'the wire'.
Joining the military is not something that should be rushed. Remember that you will have to sign a contract for at least 4 years. It very difficult to get out of that early. I am not sure but I do not think the recruiters recruit for officers so they try to get people to go enlisted. I suggest visiting academyadmissions.com and having a look around there and talking to one of the liason officers online. They can answer a lot of your questions. I am in the process of applying right now and although my requirements are cut down because I am currently enlisted, there is still a lot to be done. The only person who can decide if its worth the work or not is you. |

Well, they told me that officers are being cut down by alot, so it would be pretty bad to go through all the work to just end up being kicked out. I'm really confused about what to do though because I really want to join but I just don't want to get deployed.

At the moment Officer are being cut down. In four years time they will have cut out all they need. The force shaping is going to end within four years
If you dont want to deploy at all than I dont think the military is for you. Deploying is what we do and until we are fighting battles in our own country, we will continue to deploy. The cut backs that are going on at the moment are trying to get rid of the people who have not deployed at all in like 8 years. So they are not going to kick people out who have just joined. So if you join now, I would put money on you being safe from a mandatory end of service. |

Security Officer? never heard of it, I have heard of Security Forces, or cops or even SPs. Pretty much to be a cop you need to be breathing. No offense to any cops, but it really isn't hard to be one. There's a reason people fail out and become cops. I respect them, but it isn't hard to get. Don't want to deploy? Then don't join, simple as that. It's the military, we deploy that's what we do. As far as getting kicked out, it won't be happening with newbies. Unless they are total dirtbags and really warrant a reason to get kicked out, it will be the older enlisted that will get the boot. By older I mean people who've been in a while and carved a niche in a nice comfortable place for themselves not doing much.

In order to get into SF all u have to do is pass the ASVAB. Upon completing Basic, you'll stay at Lackland and go through 14 weeks of training to become a cop. It's easy training. I agree with Deadfingers, if you don't want to deploy, don't join the military. All services and jobs are deploying to the desert. That's what happens when there's a war. That's what we do. We're the US Military

If the biggest thing you is worrying about is being deployed you might want to check with the Goast Guard. I havin heard about them being over there unless you pick a special type of combat/bomb/intel job that you can be attached to a Army or Marine unit. they normally stay within the USA and work Homeland Security. If you are not close to a Coast Guard Recruiter then ask yourself is it worth the trip to go talk to them and see what they offer if it can keep me from being deployed to Iraq or Afghan. The coast guard pay is the same as every other branch of service. Good luck
