Alright, I was selected for the general aptitude slot that I put down as my last choice. So I started reading about it and stuff, and well a lot of people say that doing this will result in me getting stuck with a crappy job when I get there. I got an 81 overall on my asvab which means I qualify for a lot of stuff. I am just worried I'm going to get stuck doing something that isn't even close to what I wanted to do. Did I make a huge mistake putting that on my list. Cause about.com said that the air force saves most of it's jobs for people that pick them at Basic Training. I mean, I am VERY open to doing various things but I don't want to get stuck doing something like repairing refrigerators or something like that. Can anyone help calm my nerves a little bit? I want to do something involving computers, I'm just kind of worried those won't be on the list at all because they all got guaranteed to people.
Thank you very much for all your help. |

As you are finding out, you will be making choices as you move through the process to get where you are going. Take your time (if thats permitted) and think things through. Ask questions and get answers from the people you are dealing with. Getting selected for the General Apptitude does not equate to being assigned to a crappy job. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but if it does, its generally because the individual wasn't paying attention and was being careless through the assignment phase. ASK QUESTIONS! Mind you , I am a retired Marine so this is all just my opinion. Hopefully some of our Air Force types in here will offer you some better reassurances. I hope so too, I mean either way I'm serving my country so it's not that big of a deal. I wouldn't imagine that it would lead me to a crazily crap job or anything. Heck I mean sometimes you go into something thinking you are gonna hate it and then it turns out to be awesome. I ship out to BMT on the 3rd of march. I went to meps in december, I guess I was just expecting more time. Thanks a bunch gunny, even though it wasn't a very definitive answer I still made me feel a bit better.

Sorry about the fuzzy answer, but that question really calls for one that has had that specific experience. My dad was career Air Force and his only advice to me was and I quote "Never let them know that you know how to type" SEMPER FI The Gunny PROUD TO BE AN INFIDEL America is not at war.
