Hi my name is aaron, i am considering joing the air force. i am 19, 6'2 200lbs, nothing physically wrong with me. i took the practice test and got a 71. i have talked to a few recruiters, but cant seem to come up with a list of jobs i want. i am pretty much looking into any aircrew jobs, or munitions. i think that the air crew jobs would be fun cause the trainging, and think it would be a fun job if anyone could give me personal experiance with the jobs and maybe some pros and cons, what would be great. thanks alot ahead of time

Not too many real Air Force types in here. Us Marine types along with our buddies from the Navy and the tag along Army types always have opinions concerning this branch of service. So be careful what you wish for!

Yeah, Air Crew jobs can be fun and exciting. One thing that I have always noticed about those that fly for a living, they are always the first ones on the scene of an aircraft crash!

Munitions? If loading them up into bomb bays sounds like fun, you must be from Nebraska.

You might consider just checking out becoming a crew chief since you get to supervise everything that goes on around the aircraft, plus if you become a crew chief for fighters, you get the chance to become a buddy with "benefits" with your pilot and they'll maybe take you up for a flight sometime, hehe. I myself don't want the job as a primary, but I guess I'd take it as an alternate.

I went into the gas station today and
asked for five dollars worth of gas....
The clerk farted and gave me a receipt.

Stuck, I may be a little late on this answer, but I was USAF 4 years. Then it was that you went through Lackland and while you were there you had a job interview. An NCO sat down with you and he listened to all your wishes and desires and he had your file with your scores in front of him. He discussed with you all the options. It was done all very professionel. In the end the needs of the USAF come first. But if there are openings in what you want to do and you qualify, you get it. In my case it was like this: I was a machinist/tool & die maker before I joined. But the USAF needs very few of them. So he gave me the option to become a jet-engine mechanic, which I took and never regretted. There are technical jobs in the USAF that are in very high demand on the outside. But air crew jobs etc. as glamorous as they might be, is not needed that much on the outside. Air crews spend many boring hours on looong flights and are often travelling all over. True, they see much and get flight pay, which may be an incentive. So, unless you want to stay for retirement in the USAF, I recommend you try to get a technical job.

I worked in avionics for a few years and wanted to get my A&P license. However, due to work hours and temp duty assignments all over the world, I never got the chance to achieve that goal. Also, back then, the AF did not promote the idea. Maybe afraid to losing you to the airlines. Now, I hear the AF wants you to get the license and it fills in one of the "squares" for promotion. I may be wrong here. Just relaying what I have heard.

I am not really crazy about "about.com" but this list will give you an idea about the different career fields.
