I am 20 and will be 21 in July and I have been wanting to join the Air Force. It would be an honor to serve my country. I have a few questions about the signup process. When you go to the recruiter, is it possible to know what job you're going into before you sign the papers?? Also, the job I am mainly wanting is Aerial Gunner Apprentice. I know alot people say at first, well you just want to be macho or whatever not knowing what you're getting into. But I am the kind of person that takes shit on as it is. I can do anything I get trained for. I know that it is based on what the AF needs and how you score on ASVAB. I was just wanting some information on any of these fields. Also, does anyone know what life is like for an aerial gunner on the choppers? That is what I am mainly trying to go after. Any information on these can help!! Thanks, Aaron

So you want to be a door gunner? You do know there's medication for that?

Just kidding.

You need to go and speak to the recruiter to find out what jobs and career fields they have available first. He is the one that can answer your questions. It sure doesn't hurt to ask. Just don't sign anything until you get the answers you are looking for.

There's much more to the door gunners job than just aiming and pulling the triggers.

If you want to be a door gunner then check out the army and see if you meet the quals. They use Blackhawks now more than hueys.

Count it the greatest sin to prefer life to honor, and for the sake of living to lose what makes it worth living.

AAronbarness, I believe the job you are looking for in the USAF doesn't exist. That's WWII & perhaps Vietnam stuff. Even when I was active USAF many moons ago (I am a two services veteran, USAF & Army) there were only a handful 'door gunners'. The door gunner these days (if there still is such a thing) is the crew chief of the chopper who is crosstrained. His normal job is aircraft mechanic. To qualify for that job you must be a top notch individual not only in HS but also in character and fitness. See your recruiter on this. Could it be that you played 'Delta Force Xtrme Black Hawk Down' too much?

to become a gunner in the past you had to be a crosstrainee out of the 2W(aircraft munitions/ armament) career fields. however they have been accepting non prior service types for a few years now. the airforce employs gunners on MH-60 pave hawks(CSAR) where you actually SHOOT the guns (along w/ maintenance, etc), and on AC-130 gunships, where you load/maintain them..you MAY be able to get a spot on helos but more likely they need gunners on 130's. good luck. study hard. dont suck.
