I just have a question about which branch I should join. But first I'll give a little background. I have always believed that I would join the air force after college. However, with the current state of the economy my dad has just been told that he will be losing his job of the past 22 years. I am a 21 year old 3rd year college student majoring in history and do not want to put undue financial burdens on my family. So with that said I am thinking about bringing forward my plans to join. At first I considered ROTC but I'm already 3/4 finished with school and will not be in college for 4 more years. But I would like to be able to finish my degree before going active that way I could hopefully become an officer and be finished with school. I have considered going ANG or AR so that I can come back home and finish my degree. However, I was reading on the ANG site that you would have to enlist with them for a period of 6 years to apply for college money. I know that I'll be through with college in half that time so I guess what I'm getting at is which branch will allow me to move quickly from reserve or guard duty to active duty and CO school? any replies greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Major objective: Finish College
Second objective: Enter Full-time service.

Seconded. Finsh your last year and get that degree. Once you accomplish that, then assess your situation.

For the best jobs available (best benefits with rank and all) you need to complete college. I do say it might not be too late to join up with AFROTC; I have a good friend who was an instructor pilot for 6 years as a 1st Lt. at Lackland AFB in Del Rio, TX. He joined Oklahoma State's AFROTC unit in almost his junior year and ended up with a flight slot once he received his commission out of college. He's now a captain receiving training for the F-16 down in Alabama.
Also, I'm not 100% sure about how they transfer college hours and all that shiznizz, but the USAF is the only branch that offers its own free College of the Air Force to any enlisted airmen. That's IF you decide to take the enlisted airman's course, meaning you wouldn't get officer benefits and you'd have a whole lot more competition for high-demand jobs like piloting/navigating/crew chief, etc. If you have any more questions, feel free to email me at OUtrombonist@aol.com. If I can't answer them, I got a whole lot of resources to fill you in on.

Best of luck, Jim.

I went into the gas station today and

The clerk farted and gave me a receipt.

here is what you need to do.

well first go to the detachment at your university and tell them you wanna be an officer and that you wanna go to field training in the summer. (everyone must be in rotc for 2 yrs after field training) so if you are able to go to field training you would only need to take bs classes and stretch out your graduation 1 year.

or you can finish your degree. you need to tell the detachment in the beginning of your senior year that you want to go to field training in the summer and come back and take rotc while you get your masters. thats what im doing. so you will commission already with a masters degree qualifying you for the rank of major after 4 years.

The guys above have said it. 1. Get your degree with the best grades and fastest time possible (take extra classes). Really get going. 2. While doing so see the ROTC guys on Campus and get proper advice, because there may still be a margin if you act fast. 3. Get a physical, because if you fail that for the Military, all your efforts are in vain. As you said yourself, actually you are out of the window because you have NOT taken ROTC. So, the only way left is OCS. But there you face stiff competition because of the economy. Forget the EM route for now. If things don't work out as I said, you can still do that. I.e. start from top and work down.

Also, here's a bit of advice concerning college that not many think about.

Go to one of the State Colleges/Universities for your freshman and sophmore years, work really hard and maintain 4.0 GPA for both years, then transfer into an IVY League college or university. Think about it, those with Harvard, Yale, Notre Dame, UCLA, Stanford degrees are sought after everywhere. Talk about a door opener!

If yer gonna spend the money for education, spend it wisely. If yer gonna borrow money for your education, the same should apply.

To us old farts in here, if you are gonna pay for your kids college, you really ought to consider the above for them. Ivy League degree at 1/2 the cost to you! All you have to make sure of is that they do what is needed to get in there and graduate.

There is a downside of course, send your kid to Harvard Law school, and all you'll likely get outta the deal is a Harvard ball cap and t-shirt!
