My recruiter called me one morning to tell me an open electronics career field position had opened up, this was about 2 days after i attended MEPS. I specifically told my recruiter that i did not want the position, and that no matter how long it took i would wait until ANY guarenteed avionics position open up. My recruiter agreed with my decision and said he would keep me posted as new jobs became available.

I hadn't heard from my recruiter since then, until this morning. He gave me a call to tell me that his "Capitan" informed him that due to the fact that i had a waiver for a repossessed truck, i have "no option but to accept the open electronics career field."

DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE?! I GO IN TO SEE MY RECRUITER THIS THURSDAY, JULY 23RD TO ACCEPT THE OFFER AND TO FURTHER PROCCEED WITH THIS OFFER.

Cassidy, the military in general is getting very picky about accepting people with so much as a sneeze on their record. So you repoed truck being an issue does not surprize me. I wish you luck!

cassidy, this probably has something to do with confidential clearances later in your career in the Army. People that have any kind of derogatory info in their background (I would except speeding tickets) have a hard time getting clearances because folks who owe money (to whomever), have used illegal drugs, caused public trouble, have relatives in jail, etc. can't be given clearances. This is logical. The idea is that those people can be put under pressure by others and thus no clearance. In your case the Army is simply protecting itself.

While at meps i was informed of the issue with certain clearances and that there was a period of time that you must wait for certain jobs to be available after clearing up any debt or past drug use. i was outside of the time frame and told that my debt would not be holding me back from any job at this point.

My recruiter has also just mentioned that back in May, when he originally asked me if i would be willing to accept the position or not, that is when he found out i would be forced to accept this job. it is now July 20th, exactly 2 months since we last spoke. he is just now informing me of this. If i have no other option he has also stated that i will be leaving August 18th. less than one month from now.

to further clarify i am actually joining the Air Force, i don't know if you were relating your knowledge of the army to my scenario, or if maybe i was unclear in my first post.

Cassidy

Look, you are either eligible or you aren't. It is your life so get your mind wrapped around the choices placed in front of you and not what someone in MEPS processing said that has no influenece on how your contract is written up.

If you are only serving to just get a trade and its not being offered, then don't sign up for whatever is available. Thats a quick path to being a problem for both you and the service.

Sign or not, its on you. Good luck with whatever you do decide though.

Cassidy, the clearance requirements are the same for all Americans, Civilians, Army, USMC, USAF, NAVY, USCG, it doesn't matter. The idea is to prevent spies and labile persons from entering the system. To give you an example: There once was a Navy Warrant Officer with top secret clearance who had the code book for all submarines. The Soviets offered him money and he fell for it because he had debts and liked to live high life. The damage took years to repair.

if yyou go in "open electronics" then the AF will let you choose 1 from a list of up to 6 (give or take) available jobs in the "electronics" career field group......usually the career fields w/ lowest manning. but once youre in, you can retrain (retraining is a available to ALL first term airman...... its in the contract).....whether or not you get the job you want is still a question.
