I have been debating between the AF and the Navy IF any military force at all. I will be honest and admit that i am actually afraid of being away from home for 4 years. i am really close with my familt and friends and my fiancee but i think i could manage.
here is a little bit of info about me. I m a 19 year old male and currently wokring full time and going to school part time. because of my job i can only take 2 classes each semester. and my whole family is in a tough situation so i MUST work to pay for my own school and help out around the house. So this is what brought me to start thinking about joining the force. I would be getting paid, and i could attend school for free.. correct? i want to become a firefighter and so thats what i would apply for in the air force. The idea of getting my school paid and gaining experience for what i want to do in the future sounds good to me. Is this asking for too much? i mean what are the chances of me actually being able to come out doing what i wanted to do.? the recruiter has been pushing me and saying he can make it happen but i know hes bs'ing.. i want to hear from people with personal experience. do you actually get assigned to the job you apply for? or do you even get to work your way up ther? or do you get blown off and assigned to something completly diff? |

Whatever gave you the idea the recruiter was BS'ing you?
Regarding getting what you want out of the military? There will be some give and take on that aspect. As you indicated the desire to be a firefighter, you can do that, but it will likely be on crash crew. The air station firemen are all usually government service employees. At least thats been my observation. Do your research up front before speaking to the recruiter so that you can become more familiar with his answers to your questions. Learn the terminology. If the recruiter feels that you are not committed, he may not give you the attention and answers you are seeking. Your indication about being away from home is likely why that recruiter responded in the manner he did if you started out your conversation with that type of statement. Well i got the impression he was bsing me because he said yes to alot of the things i asked.. like i said will i get to pick my station place.. he said yes you have a pick of where you want to be stationed. then i asked him what jobs there are in the force for firefighters ans which one i could get. he mentioned a couple and made them sound really easy but never mentioned crash crew..

OH and about being away from home. im sure i can work past that.. if it comes down to it, this WILL not be the reason for not joining the force. there are other thing i am weary of that i want cleared up before. one more thing i had a question about is the buddy program.. anyone know how that works?

Buddy Program is out there. I wouldn't count on it too much though. Too much would depend on the both of you passing each stage of the program. What do you think happens when one doesn't make it past a certain stage?
As for picks of where you'll be stationed? Unless you have a guaranteed slot in your contract, you will only be able to select where you want to go. (unlikely) It really is up to the military to send you where they want you. As for easy? Ain't nothing in the military easy these days. i understand that the buddy program can only go so far.. and if one of us passes and one fails we would be seperated. but say we both pass together and go for the same job, what are the chances that we would get stationed together?
\ and how would i go about getting my recruiter to put my choice of job or station on my contract? |

You'll have to ask him. Doubt it will occur though.
