I am in the Army Reserve, and I was deployed. As a army reserve enlist member, I am required to have two physical tests and two weapon qualification tests annually. Does Air force require the weapon qualification? I am considering to be an active air force member(I just graduated from college with a BS degree), and really need someone can tell me the air force life before I make the decision.
The more details, the better. Thank you very much! |

So....uhm....whether or not the USAF requires weapons qualifications is your primary concern?

I am not good at the weapon qualification, usually I am not qualified. Sometimes a solider fails to get promoted just because he/she fails weapon qualification.
I mean it is not my primary concern, it is just one piece of information I wanna know. I would like to know as much as possible, about anything. |

if you qual'd in ARMY basic then you may shoot expert in the AF.....af quals are (were......?) considered annual ground training. easy stuff man. if you can see a paper target at 25 meters youre already half way there.

It depends on your MOS or AFSC as the Air Force calls it. I believe each AFSC is categorized in 3 different sections. I believe personnel such as those in the medical squadron only have to qualify once every 2-3 years? I belong to the Civil Engineer Squadron and we are required to qualify in the M-16 annually with a minimum 32 out of 50 ( this includes 10-shots prone supported with your gas mask on ).
We can also choose to qualify for the M-9 so we can be weapons carriers. As I said before, this all depends on what MOS/AFSC you are in. Obviously, career fields like Security Forces or Pararescue are required to qualify on additional weapons and more often than everyone else. That is just common sense. The firing range we use are not always 25 Meters. I have been stationed in 5 different bases and I have fired in 2 different Marine Corps ranges, one Army, and 5 Air Force to qualify. It all depends on what base you get stationed at and what facilities they have there. NOT EVERYONE qualifies in the "nice" 25 Meter ranges. And yes, we wear our Kevlar/helmets when we qual. As far as PT...as of Jan 2010, the Air Force will go to doing PFT 2x/year. You can find the new PT Test qual anywhere online. And since you will not be required to go to Boot Camp again, you just have to graduate Tech School for your MOS and there you have it. But why go thru all that? Shouldn't you be talking to an OTS recruiter since you already have a undergraduate degree so you can get your butter bars? *Lilo* |

NYC, I was enlisted USAF 4yrs and Commissioned Officer 16 yrs Army. Unless things have changed, weapons qual. is no big deal in the USAF (in 4 yrs. I fired a rifle twice). As I remember, those that fail are not discriminated. Your job in the USAF is what counts. If you have a BS you should try to go OTS and if they don't take you, work your way down. Keep in mind that the USAF, unfortunately, has a class system. 1st class are all pilots, 2nd class are all flying crew members and the 3rd class are all the rest in descending order of their nearness to airplanes (i.e technicians, painters, roads & grounds etc.) It is all focused on flying, at least that was my impression. I was in early 3rd class as a jet engine mechanic when I was USAF. They never gave me a ride in a jet once, but when VIPs showed up they had no problems. It's all different in the Army. There, everyone has a common mission together. I.e. the Captain and LTs go out with their men to fight. Same sweat and misery for all.
