Hello all. I served Active Duty Air Force for my years and when they were done I left active duty and entered the ACTIVE Reserves as a traditional reservist so that I would still be active in the military. I now would like to rejoin and go back on Active Duty Status but seem to be getting the run around from many people (which the air force is great at doing). Does anyone know how to perform this or have any advice on what the steps to take are? If so it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Firstly, Good Luck.

At the moment, the Air Force is force shaping so they are cutting A LOT of positions and contracting them out. Unless you plan on coming into an undermanned careerfield (PJ, CCT, TACP, SERE etc) than I think the chances are slim. Dont expect to get a cozy job behind a desk because their arent going to be any for the military. Most, if not all, of the jobs that are going to be around in about 1-2 years time will be deployable positions.

Im in Comm and they are cutting over a 1/3 of our positions and those that arent cut will be combat comm and deployable comm.

What do you plan on doing?

Intel is expanding, but mostly the officer ranks (from what I see).

Talked to one of my USAF brethren today, and, yes, intel jobs are expanding right now. Officer and enlisted ranks. Ask the recruiter about getting into those jobs.

Settled in, and renting a house for at least a year....maybe two. Wanted to make sure everything worked out and we liked it out here. And we love it out here. So, probably will end up buying the house we're in. It's a new house, so we're renting from the builder, says he'll give us a deal we can't refuse when the time comes.

Lot cooler up here in the high desert (5K ft). Nice area, nice people, we got a lake to fish and some wineries....microbrewery down the highway, but haven't made it out there yet....and no traffic!

So in 1-2 years all the good jobs in the military will be done by civilians (save AF pilots, which is a major crap shoot to get into anyways). This will be a rude awakening by anyone joining in an MOS that they think is an inside desk job and are not told otherwise by there recruiter, I will be watching the news and writing senators when it starts happening. So does that mean that all the direct commission doctors and laywers will just be civilians hired to work on base.

How can you extrapolate from what was asked to reach your conclusion? Do you have any source for this or is it just an opinion?

It is simply an extrapolation of the information provided. Assuming you like desk jobs. Assuming the statement made about contracting out any desk "style" jobs it is going to be at recruiters integrity to make people understand that the military no longer has support style positions, that everyone is going to be in unpleasant situations (ie no air conditioning or siting down, etc, etc) that joins up. There are people that want to walk the desert or what ever, but I think the military will need to change its advertising and recruiters are going to have to be very forthcomming or else its going to be a real bad deal for alot of people.

just what kind of
" Engineering Degree " does rrpearso have, anyway?

' toy twains'?

heaven forbid he's a structural engineer and anyone drives over a bridge he had a hand in building..

anyone with his command of the English language [ supposedly a native speaker ] has got to have misread the instructions for ' little engineers' and had a part or two left over.

[and maybe one or two missing from somplace else?? ]

Insert Tab A in Slot B then fold ...

There I was , at the head of the old 68th...

He says that he is a chemical engineer – guess he sniffed too much. I worked with some PhDs in Chemical Engineering for a few years; some of them had to be told to wear coats in the winter.

His logic: Someone says that they dislike birds because they are dirty and he thinks that they are advocating the elimination of all bird kind.

Also, Troops should be told that they are not going to get air conditioning! They will probably not get four-star meals either but don’t tell them.
