Well like the title says what works better in urban and combat in general. I personally think a 7.62 round would be better even though it has a shorter range than the 5.56 the 7.62 will knock u on your ass while the 5.56 just wounds u. so what do u guy think

7.62 mm Versus 5.56 mm
Read the study. SEMPER FI The Gunny PROUD TO BE AN INFIDEL I prefer to think that the chip on my shoulder gives the monkey on my back something to play with. 1. I actually have read that study and I find it's conclusions to be a bit far-fetched and more that a bit nebulous.
2. Are you talking about 7.62x51 NATO or 7.62x39 Soviet, they are massively different rounds. Really there is no comparison there... the 7.62 ballistics overshadows the 5.56 in every way... From intermediate and long ranges to hard target penetration the 7.62 is superior... But you also have to look at what is needed in the current theater of operations as well the simple logistics involved... Really the closer comparison would be that of the 5.56 and the 6.8, as they are both intermediate rounds as compared to the full size battle rifle round of the 7.62

While it is true the 7.62x51 has longer range and is more powerful, it is also heavy, large, kicks like a mule, and generally nessicatates heavier rifles to carry it, these qualities make it an inferior round when the extra power rarely comes into play for anything except a designated markman or sniper. Its not like todays Soldiers or Marines have much of a choice in which round or weapon is better. They take what they are issued and do the best they can with both the round and the rifle. By the by, all Marines are designated Marksmen.

I like my 7.62 PTR-91 with a 9 power scope, I can shoot a pattern roughly the size of a silver dollar at 400 yards in prone with support, it does not kick much because of the semi-auto action but it is a very heavy weapon, I would not want to go on a 100 mile road march with it (or any road march for that matter). The best sniper rifles are the .338 and the barret M82, but the cost of these rifles is excessive.

the longest force march I took was 84 miles, but that was jungle warfare training, humping across the Panama canal....actually we only saw the canal 3 times and that was when we had to get our bearings from a mountaintop. It took us twelve days.
