My first post on this forum. I normally collect antique edged weapons, but my first shotgun was a 1897 Winchester. Have always liked the way they look. Recently bought an 1897 Trench (made 1919) with bayonet and sling.

Also bought the below pictured heat shield and bayonet lug. Trying to ID it.

Joe Poyner "U.S. Winchester Trench and Riot Guns....." describes this as a "Type S."

I am guessing it is for a Model 12 Winchester Trench gun(?)

Opinions?

Barrel does not protrude through heat shield.

Only mark on it is this number and "W" or "M" letter

Appears to be spot welded

Collectors will notice that there was a change in the ventilated heat shield during WW II from the WW I design of six rows of holes to only 4 rows starting in 1942.

Yours appears to be the WWI design.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed the 29 holes as being earlier. The pictures I had of the Model 12 did not show the end of the barrel.

The link is great!

Yeah, this heat shield and bayonet lug is what turned a riot gun into a trench gun. We had a full rack of these (25) in our armory even after Nam.

It has six rows. Four rows have 29 holes and two have 27 holes.

It seems that it is a M12 Winchester WW1, but I did not post this information of rows and holes.

Someone else said that the number is the same on all these. Maybe a part number?

Agree or disagree?

downloadable parts manuals

This guy has posted pdf files that detail the part numbers. Give it a shot. At least you won't have to pay for them through Amazon!
