Depends on the type of round and what you shoot it out of. I know with a rock and a nail I can't hit shit with it....

What's the book say? 300 max effective range, 500 max range? Something like that?

I've hit targets from 800m with the M16A2, I think TheGunny has hit from 1000m. And I've heard stories of guys hitting from 1000m before.

300m I think is a good call for the effective range.

Meter-yard, pretty close.

And I don't recommend the rock and nail thing. Wink

I actually did that with a primer for....I'm guessing it was 20mm-- it was polished and shaped to be the end of a swagger stick. Customs wouldn't let me take it home with an "explosive charge" in it. So, I got a rock and I took the firing pin out of my rifle instead of a nail. Good thing I was wearing gloves. Probably would have hurt worse and I'm pretty sure I would've been bleeding pretty badly if not for them. And the feeling in my hand came back after only 10 minutes....Customs officials laughed pretty hard and let me take the stick, I think if nothing else for entertaining them.

thats the way to do it gunny. I am a bit confused on what exactly you did. what type of round was it and why would they let you discharge it in an unsafe manner?

Oh, it was just the primer, the charge and slug had been removed and some local had put the polished brass casing (primer still intact) on the end of a swagger stick that eventually was given to me as a gift. Only, when I tried to leave the country with the stick, the US Customs guys noted the primer still intact and told me to get rid of the primer charge somehow, or get rid of the brass tip on the stick. Then they watched amused as a wedged the brass casing between the seat and the side of a HMMWV and whacked it with a rock and firing fin. Primer exploded and I was free to take the stick home.

I'm guessing by the size of the casing it was around 20mm, but it had been shaped, buffed and polished, so no telling how big it was....

1. PFC, all caps posts are considered rude and immature by most boards, I would kindly ask you to stop that.
2. It really depends on the model actually. The earlier models it was 300 mm or so, but in the later models with heavier barrels it was extended to about 500 meters, though I'd have to say the actual effective range (not the one given out by the brass) is probably closer to 400.

Another thing to look at is how much of a punch is still left in that little bullet... Most people will tell you that with the M855 round that the "effective range" is going to be around 300 meters

I am going to have to call BS on the 800-1000m with a .223, maybe 600m with a bipod and a scope anything beyond that is a luck shot if you hit paper with a .223 (maybe a SIG 550 with a bipod and scope .... maybe). I could see 1000m with a .308 with a 10 power scope and 2 full tiwist barrel. Beyond 1000m your looking at a .5 cal and anything beyond 2000m a .5 cal with special ammo.

I know what alot of different types of guns can do and the M16A2 or M4 is not all that, and myths of 1000m non luck shots just fuels the urban legends

Gotcha Gunny
And as far as 800M shots being urban legend i promise you they are not... Me personally no i do not have the skills (or eye sight) needed to make hits at 800M with iron sights, but i have made hits at fairly long distances with a scoped bull barreled rifle

1000 meters = 3280 feet. One can make that shot, but it certainly isn't gonna be a kill shot.
