I will be going to MEPS within the coming 2 weeks and, with Luck, I'll be in boot camp within 2 months going for Master At Arms, as a Reservist.

I was wondering if any current MA's had any wisdom they wished to share to give me a little more insight on the job I will be doing. I was also under the impression as a Reservist I could volunteer for a Deployment. I was wondering if this was true and if so what are the lengths of deployments you can volunteer for.

Sully any thoughts ya want to share with Von?

At this point, I'm not sure hearing what a Gunny has to say about Master of Arms would be benificial just yet Wink

(Master of Arms on board the ships ALWAYS had the best hooch!) sorry, couldn't resist!

Von saw your post I got out of the USN about the same time that MAA Rate was put in effect so I don't know much about it. But like thegunny said MAA often have privileges that other people don't have. With the Gitmo you can never tell. It would not surprise me if Congress manages a drawdown in Iraq part of the Security for the remaining Troops may very well be USN MAA I don't know.As far as Reserves & deployment I think it would depend on the need.

Reservists have all kinds of options, and (like most things in life) it depends on money. Whoever pays for the deployment (and how much money they have) will determine where you go, for how long, and whether you're staying in a hotel or a tent.

"Quick fills" can be managed locally (deployments for a quick fill position, usually only weeks long).

Then there are "activations" of several types-- anywhere from six months to two years.

And nowadays, if you want to deploy, you will.

Friend of mine was married to an MA. She was a K-9 handler. Claimed it was the coolest of all jobs.

Thanks alot for the information guys. I was wondering if you guys know or can give an educated guess on if the USN is in need of MAA at present and when I joined if they would be a good chance of being actived. I was told by my recruiter it would be doubtful but I figured I see what you guys have to say. Either way I'm going just what to compare your expertise with what I was told.

Also as far as deployments: did you guys have any recommendations on places that would be classified as "must sees." I will be using my oppurtunity in the Navy to visit some place in and out of the U.S. and I could use some inside information.

Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Guam, Italy, Spain, Scotland, England, Sweden. Never really enjoyed Japan all that much. Too expensive, hard to drive over there due to not being able to read the roadsigns. The people were pretty great though. Enjoyed the hot baths, snow on the beach in wintertime.

What is really a crying shame is the Philipines getting shutdown as a liberty port for the US. There was no place better in the world to spend your time away from the ship. It was the equivilent of Disneyland for your pecker.
