If you're majoring in Political Science, Government or International Relations, where would you likely be placed?
I'm a college sophomore thinking about joining the Navy Officer program after I graduate from college. I'm wondering where I might end up. Any help would be appreciated. Fair Winds and Following Seas |

Then why didn't you say you'd be interested in intel? You can do just about anything you want, Poly-Sci won't make you fit in better if you'd rather be working with gun crews...or in the engine room. What do YOU WANT to do?

The simple pre-requisite to go officer is to have/get a degree. A military commissioning program is what awards your commission so you can become an officer. Depending on what community you want to go to will determine what your billet (job description) will be. For example, if you go submarine officer, your primary job description is to become a nuclear propulsion plant operator. There are officers with Nuclear Engineering degrees and there are officers with English degrees operating our submarines. Essentially, what you majored in doesn't really matter that much. The Navy will "train you" on what you need to know for the billet you are going to fill. Now, if you have a specific Restricted Line interest, such as Intelligence, your best bet is to contact a recruiting DISTRICT office and ask for the officer recruiter. Express your interest in going in as an Intel Officer so he can set up your candidate package accordingly. If you choose to go Unrestricted Line, you will have more billets and collateral duties than you'll know what to do with. |

The second portion of my advice:
If you know for certain that you want to join the Navy as an officer, when why not call the officer recruiter to set up your package, and maybe even let the NAVY pay for your college degree? Essentially you'll sign a contract to have the Navy pay for your schooling, as long as you owe them XX amount of years of service. Usually 4 or 5 (sometimes more for other jobs). Give them a call. They're the ones who work on this question on a daily basis. |

hmmm, yep this guy belongs in the engine room alright. Prove yourself down there first, and then perhaps you can get into intel.

I'm a Poli-Sci major, too. My local navy recruiter told me I needed a 3.5 gpa to be an officer. Is that right?

No. There are thousands of Naval Officers who graduated college with less than a 3.50 GPA. If the Navy made it that restrictive, 1) we'd never fill the available billets, and 2) well over half of the officer corps wouldn't be eligible. Check with the programs that are available, and look into their prerequisites. Some require a C average, while others may require as high as a 2.50 or a 3.00 GPA. As I mentioned before, it's not the college or the major that decides the officer. The Navy will "train" you according to what they need. The next question is: by "local recruiter," do you mean enlisted recruiting office, or District Officer recruiting office? An enlisted recruiter will be slightly more than reluctant to push you in the officer direction when they have a quota to make. (Once again, no offense to the honest recruiters who do their jobs well.) |

I've heard conflicting reports now. Some people tell me it's easier to be an Officer through enlisted. Another person told me it's easier to be an officer after a degree. I want to know which one is the truth. If that is possible here.
