Navy To Re-Establish Disbanded 4th Fleet

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Navy plans to re-establish its Fourth Fleet, disbanded in 1950, to oversee ships, aircraft and submarines operating in the Caribbean and Central and South America, a Defense Department statement said.

Rear Adm. Joseph Kernan, commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command, will lead the fleet, effective July 1, according to a statement by Adm. Gary Roughead, chief of naval operations. The fleet will be based in Mayport, Fla., coordinating efforts with the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command, which also is based there.

I wonder what would be the purpose of a Command in that area of which is the Southern Command.

Bjd392 can not bring myself to believe they would re-activate a Fleet for drugs or Pirates I would think they would move DDs & something to hunt Subs with you don't need a Fleet to hunt what you guys are talking about.For some reason or another do we need a full presence in the Gulf & the Caribeaen.

Venezuela I'm guessing. We've been ignoring that part of the world for too long.

Might be Russia is building AK-factory down there maybe Putin is trying to inflame South America against the US for political power.

And the fact we're losing a lot of our land-based platforms out there. Panama is gone, Bolivia gone, and now Ecuador is kicking us out. Socialism is spreading throughout the region and gaining support fast.
