Does one (active duty Navy) have to have a passport to go overseas? In this instance it's Bahrain. Just wondering?

Short an sweet as always!

Military members traveling under orders do not require a passport, however it is advisable to obtain one and keep it current in this day and age.

The negative side of this is that passports have gotten military members singled out and or killed during hijackings. I believe the last time that happened was in fact a Sailor.

I like it so much that I've applied to have my car tagged with it.

Gunny sadly I must agree and disagree with you. Among the many things attached to your orders is an instruction requiring for you to obtain a passport. The orders usually have you get an offical passport. Personally I have both an offical passport as well as civilian passport. Even with attached orders most foreign airports require a passport. I know for a fact however when I traveled to bahrain it was with a MAC flight and my passport was not an issue even though I did carry one. I

Hmmm, perhaps they have changed since I was in. I have traveled the world literally without one. On a side note, how many of you have traveled in the cockpit of a 747 with a loaded 9mm? (only had one full clip though) I was the only passenger on a 747 configured for cargo and loaded front to back with Hawk missiles from Arizona to Dhahran Saudia. The crew even let me bring the remainder of my case of Corona on board for the flight.

my fondest memories come from the lecture that listed all of the out of bounds locations in the area! Those were the first places I headed for!

Maybe in Asia but we found out in Europe going out of bounds might get your throat cut esp. Turkey and some of the other Muslim Countries and of course the outer side of Kalhoon Hong Kong which was Red China.
