Sir, The BB's under full broadside do not move but fractions of an inch. They expand internally. What you may be seeing is the "broiling" effect on the water surface. The strength to persist...The courage to endure. |

Sir, That would have been USS New jersey that shelled the hills of Lebanon following the bombing of the Marine baracks. A crew member (radar technician) was in the baracks when they exploded killing the crew member along with the Marines. The strength to persist...The courage to endure. |

Sir, USS New Jersey was on station in the Med and on her way home during the opening of the Gulf War.Shortly after she was pulled from service (Sept 91). Her two sisters Missouri (63) and Wisconsin (64) served the opening of the Gulf War as well as (Operation Desert Sabre). The HE round for shore bombardment is 1,900 lbs and the AP round is 2,700lb. Dreadnought...good post I lived in Long Beach Ca. and both the New Jersy & Missouri were home ported in Long Beach CA.I had a lot of Beer drinking buddies on both ships a couple of yrs.before de-commissing.One thing for sure you could tell the difference in a fighting ship and a dress ship the USS New Jersy had 15 Battle Stars and the Mighty Mo had the prestege.

Thanks Sir, Yes, New Jersey and Mo were both homeported in Long Beach CA after their refits. At one point prior to 1968 we had three (61,62 &64) here in Philly Naval Reserve. Mo was always a continent away in Bremerton. Seal Beach where they conducted their missle load outs prior to recommision was but right around the corner from Long Beach. When New Jersey retired, she retired with a total of 19 battlestars and ribbons. She is still the USN's most highliest decorated battlewagon and Mo certainly does have the prestege not only of being the place of the formal surrender but also as being one of the two last battlewagons in service. The strength to persist...The courage to endure. |
