Kind Sirs and Ladies:

I am in the enlistment process for our world's finest Navy. My main interest for a job is in aviation mechanics, I want to come out of the Navy with a certification with the FAA for aviation mechanics, I'm more interested in motors and other aircraft subsystems than with structural work. Does anybody know which aviation jobs will get me a certification so can go right into a civilian aircraft mechanic's job when I get out? If this question is too vague and it's clear that I need to do more research then please say so. I feel like I'm in kindergarden with all the Navy/FAA job descriptions and policies.

My recruitor told me that AM job covered the FAA certificate but I wanted to get another opinion on the matter. Please let me know if there are any useful links you know of too.

I want a fun job fixing aircraft in the Navy and after I get out.

Any insight? Thanks for your time.

My dad served four years as a aviation (jet engine) mechanic (USMC) and was able to go straight into an airline job with very little certification processes (although this was 1966...). My uncle is with FAA and sent me this link--

Click around on the links at the bottom of the article as well, might answer most questions.

He says just about any formal training in the USN/USMC will get you a certification or close to it. Problem (right now) is the airlines are hurting. Competition for jobs is pretty tough because they're not hiring. So, related college degrees in addition to military experience look better on the resume.
