Honest opinion on what you people think... Im considering the Navy and have for a while. I have a girlfriend who knows that ive wanted to join the military for quite sometime now. We plan on getting married in December/January area. She wants to be with me while im in the military. I know alot of the Navy jobs are on boats n what not. But I was wondering if anyone knows any jobs that are more shore duty than boat duty type stuff. Or is there nothing the Navy can offer me in my situation? Honestly. Please tell me. If u can Email me... fobiz4lov3rz@yahoo.com or IM me at kOtTeNnMoUfKiNg (AIM). Or just reply 2 this. Tell me if the Navy is even right for me. THank you

Let me get this right, you want to serve, but you don't want to serve without having your wife with you? Join the Coast Guard. Son, where ya been since 9-11? We are fully engaged in the GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR. No one can even begin to predict how long that will last. So if you do enlist in the Navy, expect to be deployed frequently. "Any ship can be a minesweeper... once." This message has been edited. Jeremy -A peace time deployment of a Ship is normaly 6 - 9 months I don't know what they are now but when the Ground Pounders & Jarheads were on their way to Bagdad some of those Ships stayed there until they were either relieved or not needed for support. Those Gators were there to support those Jarheads and we always have Warships to cover everyone in the Theater. If you want stay on land with a guarentee don't do the US Navy .No one ever mentioned it but you can bet at least one Sub.is in the area and they are the Big Boys .

The Navy is attempting to do away with all shore duty billets. You join the Navy to be on a ship, so I am told. Everybody goes to sea. My particular rate just increased its sea rotation. Basically the shore Navy is run by civilians. In my division there are two military and I am one of them, the rest are civilians. So get you bathing suit ready.

DR.UFO - There has always been rotation in Shore Billets but they will never remove all Shore Billets Civil Service has always been a great part of the US Navy even in Shipyards,Naval personal,Naval Supply always will have Commander of US Naval Rank.

The Navy wil possibly retain a few shore billets for PSD, some supply people and a few specialty billets, but rest of us can kiss shore duty goodbye. What good is a sailor sitting in an office somewhere typing when he could be cleaning the brasswork in a pasageway or keeping people awake with a needle gun?
Don't forget about the contractors. Ex-Navy = big money. DR. UFO |

DR.UFO -That is about the only billets every existed except some Communictions ,and some Airdale Billets they will also remain some prefered shore duty billets such as Tug Boats and pusher boats will contiune .Also some Overseas Billets will prevail.

Hmmmm, now why would anyone join the NAVY, and then piss and moan about having to actually serve on a ship?

Hope you're not talking about me Gunny. I did my time on many ships. In fact I am going back to sea in November. I have had many good times visiting other countries and such. I am an airdale, I don't do any of that shoe stuff anyway.
