I'm planning on joining the Navy and I think I'd like to get into the DC rating. I haven't talked to a recruiter yet but I want to get some info on it before I choose. Any help would be nice.

Chevron77 The DC rate no longer is in place it is Hull Tec and it is a good rate and always has been so many different jobs Damage Control covers a lot of ground esp onboard Ship.Ask your Recruiter it also has a lot of training that will serve you well when you get out of the Service if you do and it has always been a Rate you can easely advance in if you know your job.

Sure you wanna know before you sign on the dotted line?

OK then here goes:
Generally shipboard training includes but is not limited to the following:
getting locked into a chamber that simulates a ships compartment and handed a kit containing wooden pegs, pipe patches and a hammer. They then start flooding the entire chamber. They don't open it up until you have all of the inbound water leaks stopped. (if they see you drowning though they will open up the door....)

Another training involves fire on board ship. They take you into a chamber with a raised wire mesh floor. They take two teams, each armed with a raincoat and a fire hose. The two teams ingress the room from opposite sides. They then set the floor below your feet on fire. The intent here is to teach teamwork between two teams. The fire is burning under each teams feet. Your job is to suppress the fire under the opposite teams feet while they do the same for your team. It works at first, but eventually desiel fuel floats on all that water, so pretty soon, each team has flames licking at thier legs. What generally happens then is one team will drop thier hose down at the fire under thier feet, depriving the other team of any protection they may have enjoyed when both sides were functioning as a team. Yer eyebrows do grow back....eventually.

Those are just two of the many examples of whats in store for DC's on board ships.

By the way if you qualify for Fire fighting or Damage Control School out of Boot you will be taught how to fight different types of fire and how to use DC tools such as plugs and patches you will also be taught how to use the equipment needed.Even if you don't qualify you will be taught basic Fire Fighting ,DC Control and ABC Warfare before you leave Bootcamp it is manditory

Does the fire department acknowledge DC or HT training and experience when you apply? I was thinking of becomming a fire fighter should I get out.

Chevron77-I don't know if the Fire Dept.acknowledges the fact but if you go in the service and decide to get out and apply at the Fire Dept.if you have Military experience and have the fire fighting experince they would be pretty stupid to turn you down.

actually the fire dept trolls for sailors with this rating. A candidate with this training under his belt has easier time with the mandated training required of someone that has to start from scratch.

Particularly hated the fire dance...

YUP..the same in the old dayz..then there is the rapid compression chamber and the escape trunk simulation tower for Submariners...

You can be bleedin...but if you continue to stand for a certain amount of time after...you pass...

Big Grin
